The S3 redesign, a two-piece wool outfit with a collar and constructed shoulders, had a lot more dignity in appearance and was just better in every way. But Theiss shouldn't have taken so long to get there.

Wool? I always thought the TOS S3 uniforms looked like polyester.

Edit: Oops, I see you were talking about TNG.

My least favorite dress uniforms were in one of the later TNG movies, probably Insurrection. They looked exactly like waiters in a fancy restaurant, or possibly the valets who park your car.
I thought that myself at the time. Picard especially looked like and sounded like a maitre d'.

In regards to the uniforms in Star Trek. I don't think any of them were great or futuristic. I guess I preferred the silver Lost in Space outfits or the military jackets in original BSG.

I like the original series outfits mostly because they're so iconic. The red in particular looks great as does the green on Kirk. The rank braid is cool although I sure wish we saw some LTJGs after poor Joey.

If pressed (heh) I'd have to say the DS9/VOY unis are my favorite. They look functional and comfortable. That color they picked for the turtlenecks is perfect. The rank pips really pop. The three division colors look great. I wasn't surprised when they introduced movie-friendly unis that were obvious extensions of the DS9/VOY look.
