Examples of Sisko's parenting

One of my favorite aspects of DS9 was watching Sisko parenting Jake. I thought their relationship was very well written and acted. Sisko was very supportive of his son following the path that was right for him, instead of assuming Jake would follow in Ben's footsteps. He kept Jake disciplined, but he was openly affectionate, even as the boy became a young man. It was just a sweet relationship and I try and emulate it with my own kids. (e.g., I am very careful not to be trapped as a subspace ghost.)

I'd enjoy hearing others' favorite Sisko parenting moments and actions.

Well said, Benjamin Sisko played by the great Avery Brooks is a wonderful visual example of a strong, inspiring figure for our human community. He's my favorite character on DS9, a figure where articles should be written about a lot more IMO.

With how much he had on his hands, even in his most stressful of moments he always made Jake a priority.

I especially liked seeing how he handled the situation with Nog. It was such a normal parenting dilemma. I actually remember being a kid and my mom not thinking a friend of mine was a good influence but then seeing her grow to like this person when they were able to demonstrate their true self, a lot like what happened with Nog.

I will always recall that moment when Sisko saw Jake teaching Nog to read. I think a lot of parents would have been reactionary and not even noticed what they were doing, but he gave Jake that extra moment of trust and it ended up being worthwhile when he saw that their friendship really was coming from a good place.

This all made Nog more lovable too, and it made it clear that Jake was totally his father’s son. Jake definitely showed the same humility and kindness to Nog that we see Sisko show others throughout the series.

Definitely my favorite captain.

 

[Bad Thoughts]

I can't say enough that Sisko has been an example of fatherhood to me, and I try to emulate those qualities as I parent my own son. The episode Jem'hadar has recently become particularly poignant. Over the last several months I've been encouraging my son to do more, worrying about his friendships, but also finding him taking on new challenges in activities I never anticipated. Just that opening scene in which Sisko and Jake discuss the science project is full of meaningful bits.

I thought that the Sisko's trip with Jake in that solar sailor was awesome. While lacking a solar starsailer, I can appreciate what it takes to make those moments with your kids. The show also showed how a parent has to really wear two sometimes very different hats. He wants to be, and is, a very caring, involved father, but he also has to be a very strict commanding officer in an extremely complicated situation.

The entire episode of Explorers was great parenting.

I also really liked the hug Ben gave to Jake at the end of In The Cards. It was a silly episode, but it was emotionally perfect considering what came next.

BTW, the Rom-Nog-Quark story deserves more credit as a supplement to the Sisko-jake story than it gets.

Great thread. Their relationship is one of the most heartfelt and heartwarming aspects I love every time I watch DS9. The Explorers episode is great, but I also love Rapture and In The Cards

There was a nice subplot about Jake and Rom in The Ascent, which I had forgotten. The best part was when Rom approached Ben and they sat down to have a talk about parenting their boys. Only on Trek would you have a human man and a big-eared profit-troll talking about the challenges of raising boys over a cup of coffee.

This scene is actually one of my favorites even though Sisko is yelling at Jake. In fact, that’s WHY it’s one of my favorites. It shows how even though Jake is the Captain’s son, that doesn’t mean he gets special privileges or doesn’t have to face consequences when he does something stupid. Actually his dad would probably come down on him even harder BECAUSE he’s the Captain’s son and should know how to behave. At least, that’s what I’d do. Not sure how hard Sisko was on Jake when he mucked up. Didn’t see much of that happening. Then again I haven’t managed to watch the entire series yet.

I'm not a baseball fan but I loved it how Jake wanted to have this card as a gift for his father and how he fought for it. Not to mention hilarious Weyoun scenes that were involved.
