I've never understood 'Zap Brannigan/Futurama shoulders' popularised in 50s sci-fi, are they supposed to be some form of advanced articulation?

I always figured that the 50s stuff was derivatives of the general look of the robot from Metropolis in 1927:

They should have a Discovery episode where we get to meet the fashion designer who is in charge of the uniforms and it's revealed that he/she is involved in some sort of conspiracy to make the Federation look dorky.

I really like the costumes on Discovery and got to see many up close at the Star Trek Convention last month. I went to a talk given by Head Costumer Gersha Phillips and the other costume designers and was really surprised when Phillips was discussing Michelle Yeoh's beautiful gold costume and told the audience she didn't know what type of fabric the costume was made out of. One of the designers under her had to tell her the material was gold lamé. I thought that costume designers were very familiar with all fabrics - especially a fabric that has been used for decades in Star Trek. This made me curious how she got hired not knowing something like that. My favorite costumes are Quark's. Andrew Robinson who played Garak said that some of his costumes seemed to be made out of carpet and really uncomfortable. I think they looked great though.

I feel the same way about just about everyone responsible for the look of the show. I took a look at her IMDB credits and she's never done any other sci-fi (other than Falling Skies), which is not surprising.

They were head of a department, and the material is a well known one even to joe public. It’s not exactly pitch forks at dawn that she doesn’t know, but it is funny.

Yes it does. As Jaime said, she was hired as Head of the costuming department. The show is all about equity and it is not equitable that she was hired above others when she doesn't know something as basic as gold lamé.

I'd have to rewatch the episode - something I'd be happy to do, lol. I looked on YouTube real quick and only found the sequence where Garak is talking with Sisko. Garak is wearing a gray outfit that does look so uncomfortable and stiff.

If you google image search "garak turbolift in the pale moonlight", you'll see at about the third or fourth result some photos of Garak wearing a yellow printed shirt with black shoulders that is not unlike a TNG yellow uniform. There's even a horizontal stripe across the black shoulder panels, not unlike the TNG season 1 stripe.

Everything the Cardies wore looked stiff and uncomfortable.

How is it fair to refuse to hire an otherwise perfect and possible better candidate because they didn’t know some useless trivia about a 50 year old costume? Trek shouldn’t require loyalty oaths and proof of the devotion of the staff, it’s a show not a cult.

If the story is accurate, she was asked about a costume produced by her own department, not 'some useless trivia about a 50 year old costume'.

Um. It was a dress worn by the series most famous actress. I wouldn’t know nor care what Theiss made his stuff out of. Gold Lame is a fabric that’s made its way into general speech tbh. It’s also, I believe, quite expensive...so yeah...you would kind of expect the head of a department to know what an expensive costume for a lead actress was made out of.

It’s funny, not a death sentence for DSC.
Nor is finding it funny, or remarkable, a stoning offence either last time I looked.
