Joe Menosky Goes To THE ORVILLE...

I don't think that is how it works. They are going where the work is at. We have no idea the reason Menosky departed Discovery, but I doubt he just quit it to go work on The Orville.

Regardless of what I think of Discovery, I think it is the surer bet to be around longer.

That's the way the smart money would bet, yeah.

So what would happen if Patrick Stewart did a guest spot? He's good friends with Seth Mcfarlane. Would there be rioting in the streets?

I wonder sometimes what it would take to get CBS to sue over The Orville...

I mean, I like the show, but the degree to which The Orville recruits Trek veterans, past and present, seems as little brazen.

Unless they ever claim a character to BE a Trek character it’s straightforward fair use.

Yeah, it is very derivative, not even hiding the fact they are just trying to be “Slightly sillier Bermantrek.”

Someone would be upset, I'm sure. But since he's doing Trek again, I doubt he'll do something with The Orville.

Why would they sue? There's nothing wrong with Trek veterans going over to another show. If they do, that's their wish. If anything, it's a little absurd to think that once they're with Trek that they can't move to other shows. Trek does not own them.

Parodies are protected under fair use, aren't they?

I doubt it, because Sir Pat's also doing the new Picard series. There'd be no danger of Trek fans thinking he'd abandoned them.

Reminds me of the time before we knew the DSC cast and I heard Nathan Fillion's name being tossed around. I always wondered (still do, actually) how Browncoats would react if he turned up in Trek.

Yep, just look at Weird Al. I don't think he'd have gotten as far as he has without it. Even then, he does always ask for permission out of courtesy from what I hear. Either way, CBS would have nothing, just like they didn't with Galaxy Quest. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and artists that get parodied by Weird Al often feel like they've finally made it.

Probably just another regular job for him. Honestly, I'm kind of surprised it hasn't happened yet given all the Trek that's happened since Firefly ended.

Yeah, nobody could sue them just for hiring an actor who appeared on Star Trek. As far as I know the only time something like that could happen is if the actor or whoever was under an exclusive contract, which far as I know Paramount has never done for anyone involved with Star Trek, and I believe in case you sue the actor for breaking the contract, not the person who hired them.
The Orville has borrowed a lot from Berman era Trek, but all of it is different enough that they should be safe from getting sued.

Did Rocke S. Bannon sue over Ben Browder and Claudia Black going to Farscape? Or even the fact that their new show did a totally parody of their old show?

I don't think its actionable by CBS, nor good PR.

Stargate did a parody of Farscape? Are you referring to the 200th episode thing with Wormhole XTreme or did that happen after I stopped watching?

Just a heads up: the first season of The Orville leaves Hulu in seven days.

Morena Baccarin was in the V remake, and Jewel was on SG:A, but I don't know what the rest of them have been doing since then.
