Because it was a pain in the arse for the real-life studio model builders...
Getting the electronics to work through the small space, and over time the struts bent under the weight.
(But yeah, that was originally Matt Jeffries intent, you can read up on this! That guy had a lot of thoughts on designing that ship - like, he made the ship purposefull top-heavy, so that it doesn't look like a model that has to work in gravity, but something that operates in real weightlessness. But yeah, a lot of the TNG era design stuff ignores many of his ideas for practical reasons - even though they were clearly well thought-out reasons for them)
Impulse engines: 2 (approx. warp factor 0.3). That is... interesting. From San Diego

I have no real feeling about Impulse power, as that's not the area of Trek that holds my attention aside from working as a background detail. But I know that there have been some wonderful arguments about Simple Impulse and ships going at warp speed (or not) and I foresee this adding some fuel to some angle(s) in those forums. The Motion Picture says the Enterprise refit's impulse engines can go at least warp 0.5. So this doesn't seem to be a new idea.
KIRK: Thrusters ahead, Mister Sulu. ...Take us out.
[now in "Enterprise engineering"]
SCOTT: Intermix set. Bridge, impulse power at your discretion.

KIRK: Impulse power, Mister Sulu. Ahead, warp point five. ...Departure angle on viewer.
Memory-Alpha also says impulse engines generate a subspace field, though there is no source for that one. I know it's mentioned in the tech manuals.
Says youWell Star Trek isn't real life.
In real life, an impulse engine should continue to accelerate to an eventual .99 lightspeed.
It makes it unique though.I don't care for how out of place the Discovery designs seem. I consider it a reboot so I don't include any of the designs. I do like the shape of the Shenzhou, but the bridge should be on top of the saucer.
One piece of concept art it only has 2 nacelles on top, none on the bottom, but that was rejected because they wanted the ship to be 'beefier'...The Rollbar was connected to the rest of the saucer to make it less like the Reliant (the wording makes it sound like that was Eaves' decision, not the higher ups)

Uhm, permision to come aboard?I'm standing on the bridge of a Federation starship as we speak. The Captain says "Hello."
(*Hic*)
The Europa conveyed a huge "flagship" quality when it appeared. The sequence there they're rammed, the Admiral's hologram glitches out and they launch escape pods and self destruct was really cool.
