Why no rock music in Star Trek?

In Voyager, we have Harry Kim who plays classical music on his clarinet. We do have Tom paris who claims to be a fan of 20th century North American culture, specifically the latter half of that century's pop culture. But no rock music in any Paris-created holodeck things, not even an Elvis song, despite his interest in old cars from that era.

You're forgetting the holodeck scenario that Paris made for the Doctor's date with his Viidian patient: A convertible up on some equivalent of Lover's Lookout (only with a large ringed planet in the sky) with "I Only Have Eyes For You" by The Flamingos (from 1959, great song) playing on the radio.

I think the 'rock and roll' myth is really a product of the TNG series and the snobby pretentiousness it liked to bath itself in. Contemporary pop certainly has made its presence felt over the years.

And it wasn't in TOS probably because it was still so new and probably seen as a bit puerile and probably assumed to be short-lived. To put it into perspective, the same week Turnabout Intruder aired, Cash released San Quintin. Let it Bleed was only released earlier that year, and Abbey Road wasn't due out until September.

I was actually thinking about that too but it did strike me that it was a rather unknown ballad in the 50's style instead of some Beatles song.
OK, it was supposed to be a romantic moment so the song was appropriate for the situation.

However, I would have liked to see something like Tuvok entering the holodeck Sandrine's to relax after a tough day with his "Maquis cadets" in the episode "Learning Curve".
When he enters, he discover that the place has been turned into a rock club and Dalby, Chell, Henley and Gerron are jumping up and down, headbanging and singing "Highway To Hell" with a holographic AC/DC on stage!
