50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

Hold on. You DON'T like Corbomite Maneuver?????

Corbomite is the best episode ever. Well much closer to the best episode than Spock's Brain.
Whats wrong with it then? No there's nothing wrong with it - what was I thinking.

Well, I don't remember all the details, I just remember that I didn't like the episode for some reasons. I found this crew member who was so impulsive super annoying and also that guy on the other ship who was behind all, I found very... bizarre, I don't know. But well, I've seen it only one time and when you are so enthusiastic about it, I must give it a second chance - maybe that changes my mind :)

I think he was being sarcastic... although I could be wrong.

Bailey's outburst is the kind of thing that a main character would do in the dramatic climax of the episode, after repeatedly telling everyone he/she is okay and ignoring counseling appointments.

Actually, I meant Commishsleer, whose comment seems a little sarcastic.
Well I am serious about Corbomite. Its actually my favourite episode.
Like Tallguy says its textbook Star Trek. Its one of the few episodes in TOS that had a touch of ensemble cast feel. I thinks its how TOS was meant to be before it became the Kirk-Spock-McCoy show (not that I mind that). Even Rand shone a bit (I know it was just making coffee but I'll take what I can get). You got stressed out Kirk, annoying McCoy, Scott and Sulu being brave and true, loyal Spock. All our heroes looking good while Bailey panics in contrast.

I was very surprised to see that someone actually likes Spock's Brain better than Corbomite or Miri (although I know some people just hate that episode). I thought the guy was just being a hater but you seem genuine and thus entitle to your own opinion.
Though you are wrong so very wrong.:)

You know, it's funny. As I rewatch more and more, all of the characters hold up for me with one glaring exception. McCoy just gets worse and worse. Maybe I'm just watching the wrong episodes - he's excellent in Friday's Child, which is a somewhat esoteric top 10 ep for me - but honestly, he does something to annoy me in almost every ep.

I like the way he hits his syllables in Arena. "This SHIP, our EN-gines, our WEAP-ons. It's just incon-CEIV-able that we are im-MO-bilized."

But it was probably a mistake to try making a medical doctor the third lead in an adventure show.

Oh, I wouldn't have thought that this would lead to confusion ^^ Well, you can believe me that I'm no hater at all, I like most episodes from all the shows. Some more and some less... and this one belonged to the second group for some reason  But it must also be said that I have watched it only one time so far and the positive review of the episode in here makes me rethink my impressions. Maybe I had watched in on a bad day, I don't know. Anyway I'll definitely watch it again and see how it turns out then with the points mentioned by you and others in mind. There have already been more episodes that didn't impress me much when I saw them for the first time but which I started to like in retrospect or after a second view ;)

"Corbomite" starts out fantastic. You get some matter of fact realism about running a starship. You get great scenes introducing the characters. Then comes space battle action with exciting music by Fred Steiner.

It goes downhill a bit only when the Balok puppet keeps using those annoying noise blasts to rattle the crew, and of course when Balok turns out to be an odd little guy who means no harm. Still, overall a very strong early outing for us.

Perhaps it's his constant and too predictable antagonism to Spock.

Yeah for a human race that no longer has racism as such, McCoy still has a dig at Spock for his way of living his life, which is racism if you think about it!

All evidence in Star Trek (no bloody subtitle) is that we/they have plenty of it. I don't care what GR said on the college tours.

McCoy digs at Spock for having his organs in the "wrong place". That's not culture, that's flat out race. Of a sort that we don't even have here. Because Spock is LITERALLY a different race! Mind you, Spock gives it right back.

T'Pol objects to "outworlders". Sarek doesn't express a problem with ambassador Gav, he objects to Tellarites in general. (Vulcans are bad.)

In contrast, except for Day of the Dove, none of the Federation's objections to Klingons are racial. Even Kirk's. They're all cultural.

Just joined this forum! Currently watching TNG but seeing as I never completed TOS (namely the third season) I would be down for this! I didn’t feel like reading the whole thread so can someone please tell me what episode you guys are on and whether you are watching in airdate order or not? Thank you!
