MLB World Series 2018: Eh. Dodgers/Boston. Eh.

Not surprised to see Ricky Henderson on that list. I figured it would be rare but I also didn't think it would be that rare. Thanks for the stats. Where did you get them?

That was in the CBS Sports story on Acuna's feat.

I'm not sure anything will ever top Fernando Tatis hitting two grand slams, in one inning, off the same pitcher.

Sure, because most managers aren't stupid enough to leave a pitcher in that long and after that many runs. I mean, 3 on, then the slam, then another 3 on.... What inning # was that in?

It was in the third inning. What’s surprising is that the Dodgers’ manager that season was Davey Johnson, who was a better manager than he showed that night. Chan Ho Park eventually worked out his frustrations by taking up martial arts.

Sweep the Mariners! Bring on the Astros!

Of course all the AL teams are playing for the privilege of getting smoked by the Red Sox...but still!

The Cubs made a quiet trade for speedy Terrance Gore from KC for cash.

Story

The guy is only 27 and is 21/25 in the stolen base department. A great pinch runner who can win some games.

Chickenshit behavior by the Marlins this evening. I’ll let the video speak for itself.

Edit: Acuna has now left the game after trying to continue.
Who decided that pitch was going to be thrown? That wasn’t just the pitcher going off the reservation, someone else decided to nominate Urena as messenger. Ridiculous behavior.

Mattingly’s an old-school manager, but I would hope he’s above this sort of thing. In any case, I hope Acuna’s not hurt. He’s just a young player trying to establish himself and didn’t deserve to get thrown at merely because he’s swinging the bat well.

It was absolutely all on the pitcher. The catchers reaction said it all. Realmuto was like “dude what are you doing?” I refuse to believe that’s Mattingly.

I’m not huge on the retaliation thing but it’s gonna happen and I won’t be all that upset about.

I would be very disappointed if it turned out that Mattingly ordered that. He always approached the game the right way as a player.

I’m not a fan of retaliation, either, but I wouldn’t blame the Braves for exacting revenge at a later date. Throwing at someone because he keeps beating you is ridiculous. Urena’s fortunate he was ejected, as he almost certainly would have been drilled.

Edit: One thing lost amid all the excitement over this is that Joe Simpson was once again acting as the arbitrator for truth, justice and the “Tomahawk Chop.”

Well I’m surprised but the Braves played it straight and didn’t retaliate. Joe Simpson needs to retire.

They’ve too much at stake, as the Phillies are right behind them. Suspensions this late in the season could be costly. I’m very interested in what Mattingly has to say about this. I doubt he throws Urena under the bus, but I can’t imagine he’s happy about what happened.

One thing that stands out in the video is that the majority of Urena’s teammates were slow to come to his aid when the Braves’ bench emptied. I guess they don’t like the idea of backing up a 3-12 pitcher trying to make a statement by throwing at someone.

Here’s the entire sequence of events for anyone who’s interested. I’m a Phillies fan, and I was almost in tears for Acuna. Anything less than a lengthy suspension for Urena is unacceptable. It’s one thing to back a hitter off the plate. It’s something else entirely to try to hurt someone. Absolutely disgusting.

No matter who is responsible (I tend to agree that it's solely on Urena), I fucking loathe retaliation for anything, let alone for a batter hitting well. There's nothing more in sports that I value more than sportsmanship and retaliatory pitching is the exact opposite of that. I also hope Urena has a lengthy suspension.

In positive news, the X-rays on Acuña's elbow came back negative, but we'll have to wait until tomorrow for the results of the CT scan.

Another thought: If Manfred really wants to reduce game play time, he needs to come down hard against retaliatory pitching. I realize that's a small contributing factor in the long scheme of things, but it seems to me that it's been growing in frequency in the last few years and that ends up eating up a lot of time (as well as pissing of a lot of people including fans).

Particularly in cases where the pitcher/team is a repeat offender. Urena threw at Rhys Hoskins earlier this season, and Dan Straily and Don Mattingly were suspended in June after the former threw at Buster Posey. At some point, Manfred needs to send the message that unsportsmanlike conduct and incessant posturing about unwritten rules won’t fly. If pitchers don’t like giving up home runs, they should respond by throwing better pitches, not by trying to hurt opposing players.

Edit: Here’s Mattingly’s postgame interview. He obviously can’t throw Urena under the bus, but his comments strongly suggest that the pitch was intentional and that he didn’t order it.
