“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

"You know, I read all her starship logs as a child. It's what inspired me to want to be part of Starfleet in the first place. Just the thought that I could be part of the institution she was part of... I felt like if I became the best officer I possibly could, it would be almost like I was winning her approval. And if you cadets do the best job you possibly can, she may smile down from heaven upon you, too."

Picard in his senile days. Time to put him in a home. Good premise for the show.

Indeed. As long as he wasn't contemplating this with anger or hatred in his heart, I don't see how this breaks the Jedi code. Hell, given the Jedi are not supposed to form strong attachments, being able to dispassionately cut down your nephew for the greater good fits in perfectly with Star Wars canon.

Though in general, TLJ presented The Force as way, way different than in all the other Star Wars movies. Rey had plenty of rage, but she never fell to (or was even seriously tempted by) "The Dark Side." I actually would have liked it if the movie was perhaps a bit more explicit that the light side/dark side never really existed, and were just how frail human minds dealt with having nigh absolute power.

Kylo Ren dealt with his attachments. Could be he’s the goodie after all..

The majority of...a couple of million people.

CBS isn't bringing Picard back to satiate the STD audience, but to try to grow their service with a few million folks who aren't watching now.
That, and also hang on to the millions that signed up to watch Discovery and then promptly bailed after the last episode rolled (I know I did). They want to keep folks signed up year round, adding more content that I want to actually watch is a big step in the right direction. I'll watch the JLP series and they'll, in turn, get more of my $$

And they've also got the new TWILIGHT ZONE coming up.

Do we actually know how many people watch STD? So far as I know there are no reliable figures in the public domain.

Since this new show takes place 20 years after Nemesis...Picard would be 94 (2399). He would have already been retired by then. He would not have been an Admiral since he wasnt really into politics much

Based on CBS's own public statements its a safe guess that they picked up in the neighborhood of 2 million subscribers with STD.

In February, combined All Access and Showtime OTT subscriptions were around 5 million. Moonves wants that to reach 8 million by 2020.

might have been some kind of Admiral emiritus like McCoy.

But isn't that the number of total subscriptions, not the number of subscribers?

If 90% of the people who subscribed did so on the "free month" deal and then cancelled their subscription after watching one or two episodes, they would be counted in that 5 million figure - but the true number of ongoing subscribers would be half a million, right?

And CBS has never revealed any figure but the total subscriptions, is that not so? So we have no idea whatsoever how many people actually watch this show.

It's interesting that The Shat wasn't tapped for a TV show, before or instead of Sir Patrick, considering that everyone knows he's the original Captain Kirk and he kept being passed over for cameos in the new Trek movies. Most probably still know him as The Big Giant Head.

For all we know, he was and turned it down.

Besides, the man is 87. What show could trust that he will still be here three or four years from now?

Couldn't you say the same thing about Patrick Stewart? He's 78.

You'd think they could market the daylights out of "William Shatner's return to the iconic role he made famous ... only on CBS All Access."

My Dad says Patrick Stewart is too old to start another Star Trek show and I agree with that.
But how could it possibly work if he is alot older and a short lifespan left?
