Spoilers New Picard TV Series and Litverse Continuity (may contain TV show spoilers)

It has been announced that a new CBS All-Access TV series featuring Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard is being produced. Obviously because of the way canon works, it's their prerogative to completely disregard all Litverse developments, and, equally obviously, a lot of us will be hoping they don't.

Here's what I've pieced together

1. Kirsten Beyer is attached for writing and Kurtzman is involved (showrunner?)

2. Picard almost certainly isn't a Captain anymore and almost certainly isn't on Enterprise-E (Stewart said at Creation Con 2018)

3. Series is set "20 years after Nemesis" (2379 + 20 = 2399) which is 12 years After Hobus (2387). Current novels (2018/2019 announced novels) are set in 2385~2386 and are tiptoeing up to a magic hyperlight supernova that they either are or are not allowed to mention depending on whom is asked.

So what do we feel is the realistic likelihood that we Lit fans (and authors too) are not going to be stepped on in this new 24th/25th century TV series?

I don't need a lecture on how canon works, on how they have the right to supersede anything they want from the books. Obviously they can. But is there much of a chance that just maybe they won't?

My initial thought was that the novelverse would be completely ignored. Just doesn't make sense to be weighed down by dozens of novels that such a small minority of trek fans have read. But it appears that Beyer isn't just attached as a writer. It looks like this is her baby, she created it. So I think there is a good chance we see a lot of elements from the novelverse made canon, even if it isn't strictly followed.

Honestly, I think we will get Ambassador Picard and his adventures, and I am also wondering if the show will be animated, with Steward doing voice work for his character. While being animated would be a bit of a bummer, it also allows the show to have him travel on multiple unique types of ships and to multiple types of worlds, which would be a plus and cheaper than set construction for those components.

It’s better to have this seperate thread than to use the Discover thread for this conversation. :bolian:

I agree strongly. I want to keep this thread focussed specifically on the impact this has on the LitVerse and disregard other side tangents and random rumours about the series itself (e.g. animated/live-action or who might guest star, unless guest star rumours are related to LitVerse character fates).

I too hope Beyer does us a big solid here. And there's enough that's happened with Picard in the LitVerse that could actually go constructively toward his "broken, changed man" characterization that Stewart hinted at in the Creation Con announcement. Specifically the Min Zife thing from "A Time To," in light of the Section 31 fallout after "Control."

It'd be entertainingly nice for you and I if that were so.

Adding this to the wish list for backstory matter: how much of our galaxy is charted and how much physically explored from the Federation POV by 2399 AD? Between the Bajor-Idran wormhole, and other developments as fallout from VOY's misadventures, I'd imagine the percentages are significantly higher "now".

Note to scriptwriters, graphic designers, etc.: the maps we have in the here and now for our galactic neighbourhood are getting better by the day, given HIPPARCOS, Kepler, GAIA (especially after Data Release 2 a few months ago), and other projects built but yet to be launched. Apologies for my fixation on this.

4) there are no scripts at present.

What we know so far....

Patrick Stewart will be back as Jean Luc Picard.

That's it. That's all we know. Yes, he made some comments about when it COULD be set. That Picard MIGHT not be a captain anymore. But they haven't even started writing a script yet. Still working on basic story idea's. All of Stewart's comments can change just like that.

Literally nothing is none other than Sir Patrick Stewart is returning, there is a story outline and no scripts. @trampledamage anychance this thread can be closed or moved into the Disco and the Litverse thread?

If they decide to put The Picard Show in the novelverse continuity they'll severely constrict storytelling possibilities. Novelverse Picard is over the Borg, he's married with a kid, he's happy on his Enterprise with his Next Next Generation crew, along with Beverly, Worf and Geordi.

Unless of course they plan to pull a Logan and they'll get vaguely referenced in the past tense...

We do know that it is set 20 years after Nemesis and 13 years after the current setting of the novels so anything could happen in the interim

I don't think that's the right course of action. since there's a very real chance of this happening I think it deserves its on thread, plus it has nothing to do with Discovery. Like, at all. IMO since it's inevitalbe that people are gonna talk about it it can at least be confined to its own thread and doesn't need to hijack twelve other ones.

As per Ted Sullivan, Kirsten Beyer is the sole reason this project exists, so whether or not she took the post-Nemesis novel continuity into consideration when developing the basic concept for it is unknowable unless she chooses to share that information with us through this forum.

I hope three things - He's not a changed, broken man - He's not the center of the action (Think Barnaby Jones in space) - and finally that the litverse supports it anyway they can by giving it a good tie in and lead in intro. Here's Picard!, as a side character though (you don't even have to tell him if you don't want to).

I doubt Patrick Stewart is coming back to be a side-character in a show about a character he made famous. Whatever the story is, Picard will be at the heart of it.

I for one Hope that they, while not strictly adhearing to Litverse, will take it in to account. I've always said, the Destiny books take on the borg is a best case scenerio in ending that threat. In the Beyer Full Circle books I'm reading right now, Q says, the borg take over the galaxy eventually.. in another timeline..
So, looking forward to the show, and hope its good!
