No, all it means is that Yorktown has its own little military unit. Security made up of Fleet officers.

That's what I was going to say.

Starfleet is a clearly a Federation uniformed service, cf uniformed services of the United States, not all of which are military.

This is how I think the circle can be squared: think of Starfleet as a hybrid of analogs of the USN and NOAA with helpings of ununiformed service organizations like the Peace Corps and of executive agencies like NASA. Does that make it a military? Yes, but not exclusively. Starfleet's mission is broader than the defense of the Federation, and its mission excludes the annexation into the Federation of new territory by conquest.

But does include "we got here first?"

Or we laid claim first, or it's ours because we say so.

If during the Earth/Romulan war, both sides fought over the same territory, and later the Federation held it, isn't that conquest?

In "Arena," Kirk said that the Federation would negotiate with the Gorn for Cestus III, and implicitly do so not under the doctrine of "might makes right."

Any news at the Hallmark both about the 2019 Star Trek ornaments?

Was Whoopi Goldberg's role in Generations completely un-credited? I don't recall seeing her name in either the opening or closing credits.

Whoopi always got a Special Guest Star credit when her episodes actually began.

If we actually got there first and merely defended against attacks of others, then no, that doesn't fit any reasonable definition of conquest.

If it was two powers fighting over totally virgin territory. Eh, maybe? But I personally wouldn't call it conquest unless you're either subjugating, displacing or eliminating a pre-existing population.

Yes, but she uncredited in Generations due to the difference between TV and movies.

I wonder if it was because, as a star of some movies, there was an issue of her name having to come before some of the regular cast in Generations. The stuff agents make them care about, but which affect careers. Her name far down the list might make her look like her film career isn't going well... but her name as one of the principles would be rude to the regular cast, and she's not in the film that much.

Perhaps, Whoopie recognised NEMESIS as a heapin' pile of bovine excrement and axed to not have her name associated with it?

Oh, she was in Nemesis? I didn't notice. I got a good look at Nemesis a while ago. My impression was that it was an interesting attempt to revitalize Trek movies, to make a fresh and daring restart... They ended up veering away from Trek though. And like everything these days, too much coming at you too fast. Grandiose space opera not SF.

Whoopie was at the wedding, that's all. I'm trying to remember what her lines were, exactly. She was just bullshitting with Geordi about all the husbands she's had and then cut back to Picard's bulldozing the newlyweds with his rantings and ravings and then Data picks up the gauntlet with some cheesy song, so that Riker & Dee don't get too cozy with the camera. Earlier, though, in my previous post, I did mean to type Generations. I don't now why I typed Nemesis -- probably thinking of the Nexis, maybe. Anyway, Generations had a lot going for it, where it's a real shame that it ended up becoming such a disaster.

Even the use of Whoopie in that movie is disappointing. She's just an information dump and that's all. There's too much going on in this movie, otherwise, for any one aspect of it to get a chance to really get good. We've got the Nexis, ribbon of dreams. Then we've got Nexis the planet killer. Then we've got Soran and then we've got the Duras sisters. Then there's Romulans and star extinguishers. Now, Kirk's on the scene ... instead of adding layers to the narrative, the story became a kind of a tossed salad. So, if Whoopie had her name taken off it, then good for her. Armin Mueller-Stahl had his name taken off of MISSION To MARS, because it was a shit picture. Who needs a dead elephant on their back, you know?

I liked Mission to Mars.. Better than that Travesty of Val Kilmers. .ugh..
Conquest is a bit much. Going out and planting a flag is different thing, no one is there, its next door.. uhh. ours!
Now if the system is inhabited, then it changes. If it is a Pre warp society, and its within Feddy territory, we establish a protector status, no one goes in but science teams to keep tabs untill ready for first contact.
If it is a Post Warp society, then we make our introductions, diplomats negotiate to see if they want in or not, if they want our protection if its a border system, or just to be left alone. We wouldnt force our system on them.
Now if it was an area that say, both us and the Klingons are exploring, then we would go in, plant a flag before them, but wouldn't fight them for a system, unless that system is inhabited, and asked us for help.

Its as the books title says.. 50 shades of gray!

Not how I'd describe the franchise's umpteenth failed attempt at a TWOK knock-off.

Eh, if you've got an infodump that needs delivering, you could do worse than give it to an award-winning actress who already happens to have a recurring role in the series....
