Sounds like it might be more than that.

Halston Sage, the actress who played Alara, is rumored to take a leave from the show as she's involved in another movie project. So she will only appear in the first two episodes of the new series.

She will be replaced by a character played by Jessica Szohr -
rumored to be named Talla Keyali
. This character is also a Xelayan and will serve as 'The Orville's' security chief as well.

Speaking of season 2 guest stars, this was reported a few weeks back.

There are a number of other veteran Trek cast members confirmed as guest stars next season as well, including Tim Russ (Tuvok from 'VOY') and John Billingsley (Dr Phlox from 'ENT'). In addition, Robert Picardo (the Doctor from 'VOY') will reprise his role as Alara's father, likely in S2's second episode, which is supposed to be her final S2 appearance.

Or more like Star Trek Being John Malkovich as far as the referential feedback loops are concerned.

Orville is a light fun Trek homage that is perfectly decent and is also very derivative. It aims for the middle and hits every time.

And the better Orville does, the more likely CBS is going to consider a straight ship adventure Trek, so I’m rooting heavily for it.

It may be somewhat derivative from TNG, but it apparently made enough of an impression for the Disco showrunners to inject more humor into their dialog, as evidenced by the recent previews with the sneezing Saurian. It's like someone in the writer's room told everyone else that it's okay to not take themselves so seriously all the bloody time.
