If You Could Rewrite DS9

Besides, there are a few things that make Sisko not only bad but a truly loathsome character. The fact that he doesn't hesitate to drop bombs on civilian populations, including children, "as a ploy" to capture one man, for example, would be enough in and of itself, still, it doesn't stop there. The fact that he's still resentful about wrongs done to "his people" nearly three centuries after the events while he's in charge of a multi-racial multi-species station where he's supposed to be fair to everyone regardless of origins, bothers me greatly. The fact that he's still talking about "his people" as if for three centuries there was not one mixed marriage among his ancestors, is not only absurdly improbable, it's offensive!

To name a few.

Cogent rebuttal!
It is at least as smart as the fallacy you spread. Brooks never demanded his character only have love interests who are of African origin. Indeed, Chase Masterson tells how she auditioned for Brooks the part of Mardah, Brooks said that she was too old to be paired with Lofton, BUT he wrote a note that she should be considered as a live interest for Sisko. She credits that note for eventually being cast as Leeta.

It sounds like Brooks had no issue, wouldn't you say? What was the proof you had about his strange demands?

You must be fun at parties.

It's segregation all over again, only this time initiated by a black person instead of a white one. It doesn't make it any less wrong.
If you knew the real world reason for Avery Brooks decision this thread would not even be posted. When Hollywood and society catches up with your ideal then the Avery Brooks in Hollywood would not even need to make that decision.

Star Trek is supposed to show us the future, a future better than our present. That may not be the future that we'll get but that's the one they're supposed to depict, yet, for a long time they remained behind the times in several domains. They were also ahead of our time in several others, including the mixing of races and species. The fact that they had a non-repulsive Russian character for example in the middle of the cold war, seemed enlightened to me. So maybe some of you can understand my dismay when I see characters like Sisko.

No. He remembers the problems of the past. As a man who had relatives slaughtered in the Holocaust, I can appreciate that quality.

How come you don't seem to having the same outrage at Picard only dating white women?

How many women have we seen him date? I seem to remember only one, Vash.

Plus I don't remember Patrick Stewart saying anything about it. If he had I am sure we would have heard of it!

Romantically linked to Vash, Nella Darren, Kamala, Jenice Manheim, Beverly Crusher.

Could you please provide a link to Avery Brooks "saying anything about it"?

I did not know that 1960's Russians were meant to be repulsive! What on Earth were they teaching folks in schools back then!

Plus Kirk and Riker

The holocaust didn't happen three hundred years ago...
Are you suggesting in 2245 Jewish people and others, forget the Holocaust ever happened?

Cold war Russians in American movies were often evil and/or stupid. That was the norm.

Most people know that.

By 2245, everyone will have Jewish ancestors. That's what happens when people are free of prejudice, they marry anyone, REGARDLESS of ethnic origin?

Romeo and Juliet could have been written about any two people from two different ethnic groups, by 2245, it will be a thing of the past, according to Star Trek that is.

Do you know how many direct ancestors you have, going back ten generations? 1024.

Do you know how many cousins you have going back ten generations?

Likely more than a MILLION!

In an environment free of prejudice after ten generations, everyone will be related to everyone.

This is rather elementary but if you need any more explanations, feel free to ask.
