Star Trek: Short Treks

Micheal Chabon writing a Trek story? Damn. That's probably the most famous writing credit Trek has gotten ever.

Seriously dude? I mean, I have never read one of his books, but he's one of the most acclaimed modern fiction writers (my wife loves him). Unlike most literary fiction writers, he actually likes genre fiction as well. The Yiddish Policeman's Union is a bonafide alternate history novel, and won a Hugo and Nebula. Several of his books have been made into movies as well.

Seriously though. Trek hasn't really had heavyweights from outside of the TV writing world pen anything since the TOS/TAS days. And Theodore Stugeon, Harlan Ellison, and Larry Niven were hardly household names, even then.

Chabon? That is fantastic! And yes, he's an author who has somehow managed to acquire literary cachet and bestseller status without ever hiding his affection for genre fiction.

In fact, he moves from genre to genre with almost every book. Wonder Boys (source of the movie of the same name) is fairly conventional contemporary litfic; Cavalier & Clay is historical fiction about the early comic book industry; Summerland is a fantasy novel; The Final Solution is a Sherlock Holmes homage; Gentlemen of the Road is pulp-style medieval adventure; The Yiddish Policemen's Union is alternate history. And so on.

He's a brilliant, insightful, eloquent, imaginative writer. I'm astonished that some of you haven't heard of him! One of my favorite literary moments was seeing Chabon and Neil Gaiman trading clever remarks and doing readings of their own short work on a panel in Chicago a few years back.

Chabon’s “Calypso” Short Treks episode
Today Chabon, a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist (who also has a Hugo and Nebula), posted a photo of himself sitting in the captain’s chair on the set of Discovery. In his Instagram post the author reveals his episode is called “Calypso” and was already shot a few weeks ago, directed by Discovery executive producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi. “Calypso” stars actor Aldis Hodge (Leverage) as Craft, a man who finds himself the only human onboard a deserted ship.
I get the whole Twilight Zone vibe from this episode. Should be good :techman:

So this short Treks are not necessarily related to Discovery, and could be set in any time period?

They are probably going to set it around STD period. In the end, these Shorts are promotion for STD. It would confuse new subscribers, who they are trying to reach, if they were completely unrelated.

Note that Micheal Chabon has actually done scriptwriting before as well. While he did not write the screenplays for any of his movie adaptations, he did work on the scripts for Spider-Man 2 and John Carter. Not the best resume, but it shows that he at least knows how the work is done.

I'm looking forward to Calypso.

Not for nothing, but the Calypso may have been the name of the captain's yacht on Ent-D. this one apparently takes place aboard an abandoned ship. Calypso would probably by on Veridian 3 with D's saucer.

At least one of them is set either shortly before, or during Season 1, as Tilly is on the Discovery.

I believe the plots are as follows:

1. Mudd-related
2. Tilly-related
3. Saru backstory (I think we'll see his homeworld here).
4. Chabon story involving the new character.

I hope they make those monthly after season 2... that would be great. I would love that. No ... i want it!!!

Edit: We should start a poll!!!

We see her high-fiving Stamets in the S2 trailer. Do we know she would have been left ashore at the end of "Will You Take My Hand?"? Or is it just speculation, based on what she is supposed to next engage in?

Err, what?
I think you misunderstood something.

I'm not saying Tilly isn't in Season 2.

Her short is about her being on the ship and making a new friend, and I find it unlikely it will be set during Season 2, so it's probably before or during Season 1.
Tilly’s (Mary Wiseman) journey aboard the U.S.S. Discovery and her friendship with an unlikely partner.

I'm thinking that friendship is Burnham.
