Buffy TVS Reboot Confirmed

To try something more original than just being a copy of a show that it can never really match because of how good it was. I mean that was what the first show was going for. It wanted to be something new and it was. Nothing like it on tv at the time.

I'd rather have a new original series about a vampire hunter than any kind of remake or reboot.

It'd be tough to do a real sequel, you'd have to start by explaining why there are a thousand slayers and why the world got overrun with giant demons.

That's not why you reboot something; you do a reboot because you want to capitalize on the familiarity of what came before.

Intentionally setting out to be conceptually 'different' is sometimes what you get with a reboot (i.e. Battlestar Galactica), but, usually, reboots stay as close to the original concept as possible and then separate themselves from the original through their casting and narrative choices.

You keep suggesting conceptual changes, but if you're changing the concept, you're not doing a reboot; you're making a derivative.

I'm all for Buffy being a person of color if a non-white actress is the one who gave the best audition. But if they're just trying to pat themselves on the back for doing it, that's an eyeroll.

I don't think this is going to be in the same universe despite the reboot label. More a remake than a reboot. Also all the key things are still their. Strong young women who has to fight Vamps and Demons. Deals with social issues. Has a Watcher to help train her. I'm guessing she will have a small group of friends as well who find out her secret and help. Maybe a Angel type of lover but hopefully not another vamp this time. In fact I am on the fence about whether they should even use any established names other than , Buffy. It's hard enough for people comparing the new lead to SMG but will we be comparing Willow's and Giles and Xander's as well?

It is 15 years after Buffy ended and 14 years after Angel, a lot can happen in that time.

To be fair, it isn't someone else's idea. According to the article, Whedon is producing and handpicked former Agents of SHIELD writer Monica Owusu-Breen to be the showrunner. This reboot is very much in-house over at Mutant Enemy.

So Joss Whedon, presumably needing a job after all his drama and having to leave the Batgirl movie, hired a writer of a show that hasn't been good in several years to pointlessly reboot one of his old sources of cash. Yeah, sounds about right.

Oh, and everyone has to read Christos Gage's 25 issue run on Angel & Faith. It's right up there with Buffy: Seasons 2-3 & 5 and Angel: Seasons 2-5. Gage's Buffy run has its moments of greatness but feels... fanfictiony in a way his Angel & Faith run didn't. That shit felt genuine and transcendent. Calling it the best tie-in fiction I've ever read is like calling Big Finish Doctor Who a quaint little fan operation.

I still need to finish the Buffy Season 8 comic, but even when I do and maybe read the other seasons I would never consider reading that. Faith is literally the worst character in any TV show I like. Her concept was bad, the writing was terrible and the actress didn't exactly transcend the shit material (not that she's bad, she was fine in Dollhouse, but at least at the time she didn't help how bad Faith is).

You don't have to fill in the entire backstory in the pilot. Just have a new teenage girl who has just been activated as a slayer and she doesn't know it. Buffy approaches her, tells her that there are other slayers like her out in the world and it's her job to defend this town. And that's it. You can drop hints to what happened to the other slayers (maybe most of them were killed off by some ultimate evil?) and build up the mythology that way over the course of several seasons.

Actually he has at least two jobs including his show on HBO. HBO doesn't hire you if your career is over and you are trying to just cash in. I actually think he respects this lady and expects her to do a good job. Whether or not it happens is unknown. She has a impressive list of shows with writing credits on it and we should at least give it a shot even if you are like me and don't really feel the need for another "Buffy" show.

I didn't say his career is over, but he can see the finish line. They would probably have rebooted Buffy anyway, so he came onboard because its easily the most successful thing he's ever done. There is no reason to reboot the show, it can only be worse then the original, and he didn't even hire a good writer to work on it. This is one of the most pointless reboots ever done, so pointless its an absolute insult to the original show. I'll never watch it, I won't even watch a trailer, and I hope it bombs so badly it helps make networks more cautious abut shitty reboots.

It's always a little sad, when you have been a long time fan of a property that got a really good run and built up a complex mythology, like the Buffyverse, or Stargate, to hear people talking of resetting it all and starting from scratch, because darn it, you liked the way they did it the first time. However, a true continuation of the Buffyverse as was is never going to happen, and the original is still there for me to watch. So I'm on board. I'll give the new show a try; it will be interesting, assuming it is set in the present day, to see how Buffy tackles the post Obama, Trump, #metoo world. It was always a fun basic concept, and I could see other ways they could take it that could work. Cautiously optimistic. It'll all be in the writing.

Yeah, they can manage the demons, but can they close the door of every slayer being activated?

I don't remember if all the Slayers keep on activating or if it was just that generation, and after that only one girl in a generation will become a Slayer

Of course with the first show the issues's tended to be more about "high school" issue's and the demons were often metaphors for some issue in a young person's life. Things like Buffy lossing her viginity and the man changes or they dealt with toxic fandom before anyone knew the word with the Trio and especially Warren. Not every issue was suppose to be a huge world important deal. Sometimes it was and sometimes it was normal high school stuff so I kind of hope they try and find that balance as well. Every week can't be "Screw Trump" or that will get old pretty fast. I expect stuff like how a Twitter monster literally comes to life and starts eating people or a Wizzard is using Youtube to create literal followers and plans to do a Jim Jones situation. Granted both are internet related. Not sure what else teenagers are into other the internet. Do they still like Skateboards?

I suppose they could find some kind of explanation why there's only one, like Willow's spell had an expiration date after which Buffy and Faith remained the only slayers and then Faith's death triggered the new one. Or some new ancient evil reversed the spell and restored the old status quo, or the powers that be thought the balance was tipped too much in one direction.

But do you really want the writers to have to undo victories to justify the series? Or have to choose between continuity errors and exposition bombs? The Buffy universe fundamentally changed by the end a lot more than something like the Star Trek universe.

I'm not sure I want a Terminator 3 style "Oh you thought you saved the world? Ha nevermind!"

I didn't mean they would go on about the president of the day, just that the sociopolitical environment in which the show is taking place has changed a lot since 96 when they were starting out making the old show.

You're right though that the digital world has changed the lives of teenagers immeasurably, they'll have to include it somehow.

I don't think you understand what the term "reboot" means.

It might as well be, new show with already established brand name at this point. People use it for every new show that is a followup of a older show or movie. It's like the canon vs continuity. Both are the same for many. Labels are in the Eyes of the Beholder.

Lots of people misusing a word doesn't change what said word actually means.

That's not how it works.
