First Season 2 Images Arrive

I think there is some potential to have a supporting Deltan man or woman that everyone gossips about. Imagine Tilly with a crush on a Deltan. Some cheap laughs but with the potential to explore some harder sci fi

While I think this is an interesting idea. I'm not sure it is one I would entrust to the current writing staff.

I'm not sure where the "Spock's the first Vulcan" thing came from originally, but I could totally see it being background info made up for the first season that never made it on-screen. It would sure explain how McCoy reacted to "that green stuff in Spock's veins". Or it was just McCoy being douchy to Spock, but I always read it as meaning that McCoy had no idea about Vulcan physiology which would make more sense if Spock was the first to ever join Starfleet.

Well, startrek.com has a listing of the "Offical Star Trek canon" or something like that.

I think the "first Vulcan in Starfleet" thing may have had to do with how the show initially evolved from the start before the Star Trek universe developed into what we know now. In the early episodes of TOS the Enterprise is specifically referred to as an "Earth ship", I think the implication was that the entire crew is supposed to consist of humans, with Spock being the exception, and possibly the first alien to join that organization. This is why there's that certain attitude from McCoy and a few others over Spock being such an outsider. That's all disputed by the end of the first season once the Federation of Planets was established. Funnily despite that, Spock still continued to be the only on-screen alien in Starfleet and the characters still treated him that way. The only other Starfleet vessel we hear about with aliens is the all Vulcan crew of the Intrepid, which we never see on screen.

It wouldn't be until TAS that we'd see any other alien Starfleet officer outside of Spock.

as I stated previously, TOS shows that there are human-centric crews (with at least one being a UESPA combined service ship) and Vulcanian-centric crews, though we aren't told what operating authority Intrepid flew under. The first Vulcan in starfleet might well be true, from the standpoint of the first one on a human starfleet vessel. (or at least the first one in over 100 years, predating the UFP, close enough) . We don't know much about Admiral Terral so far.

I'd be really interested in a sort of "What If" show/novel/comic about how Trek would have been if they went with the "Earth Ship Enterprise" route.

I think at this point TOS is kind of an outlier. All other shows and films that came after have pretty much depicted Federation Starfleet regularly having alien crew-members, especially as we see budgets support more make-up with DISCOVERY and the Kelvin films. Curiously, the only time we get a species-centric ship after TOS is in a DS9 episode. Makes me wonder if we'll ever have any of the shows/films touch on that topic again.

I wonder how a ship full of Tellarites would do at representing Federation interests.

Aboard the bridge of the USS Gral:

Comms officer: sir, the Klingon ship is hailing us.
Captain: open a channel.
Comms Officer: channel open sir.
Captain: YOU’RE ALL STUPID AND YOU STINK!

Later, at starfleet headquarters:

Random admiral: it is with a heavy heart I must report the destruction of the USS Gral with all hands. Maybe sending a ship full of aliens who love to argue and insult people wasn’t a good idea. Oh well, back to putting windows on starship bridges for me...

They did this in one of the “Myriad Universe” novels iirc. It’s a good one - Terra Prime basically won in that one episode of Enterprise they appeared in.

P.s. the volume is called “infinity’s prism” (just went and checked my bookshelf!)

Oh, yeah, I've heard of that story (and I believe I own the book) but haven't read it yet.

Then Star Trek would have been a human-centric 'Manifest Destiny' in space.

Bill has been here since 2001, were there many discussions back in the day about how T'Pol couldn't possibly exist since Spock is the first Vulcan in Starfleet?

Also, Kirk being the youngest captain is another such fanon thingy.

Actually Tryla Scott was the youngest person to become captain. I didn't even know their was a theory of him being the youngest. I think he in canon gets his first command age tthe age of 30 but not sure.

Technically, Tryla Scott made the rank of Captain faster than anyone in Starfleet history. That doesn't necessarily make her the youngest, though

;)
