"President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon told a gathering of the far-right in France that they should be proud of being called racists. “Let them call you racists,” Bannon said to members of the French National Front party at their annual congress. “Let them call you xenophobes. Let them call you nativists. Wear it as a badge of honor.” Bannon spoke in the French city of Lille, where he also met with the party’s leader, Marine Le Pen.

Why should members of the far-right wear the racist label as a badge of honor? “Because every day, we get stronger and they get weaker,” Bannon told the crowd. In his travels throughout the world, Bannon has learned that “history is on our side” because “globalists have no answers to freedom.”

So folks has the USA become a democracy led by fascists?

Your WW2 (Great) Grandparents must be turning in their graves....actually some of them are still alive if they are in their 90's

I never knew my great grandparents, but my parents are sickened by what they see happening to the U.S if that's any guide.

This constant use of the word "freedom", a word whose meaning is as malleable as rubber to suit whatever the speaker wishes to convey and the listener wishes to hear is very troubling to me. It sets any opposing viewpoint as being "anti freedom", a very scary concept and one which has definite historical parallels.

I'm not sure exactly what "freedoms" are under threat except the freedom to repeat the mistakes of history and shape society as a structured expression of bigotry.

Because they are being noticed, they are being held up for all to see, because it means they are being talked about.
Over here we have the monster raving loony party. They are "wackos" but because you can just call them silly and or stupid they don't get press.
BTW I know the MRL party isn't serious about most of what they say and should not be honestly compared to any kind of extreme, racist party but I was just using them as a poor example.

Something tells me this time in US and UK history will be known as the New Dark Ages
You know what, maybe, just maybe this will lead to a new enlightened age of online news. Maybe this will encourage others, especially politicians, to make sure what they are saying is fact based and researched rather than just something they saw on their facebook wall so that they will avoid looking foolish in person again.

This reminds me of the German party "Die Partei" whose full (translated) name ist "Party for Work, constitutional state, animal protection, elitism and direct democracy". They also had a glorious election poster with "LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FCKAfDÉ" on it, with "AfDÉ" referring to the German alt right party AfD :D

If history teaches us anything, it implies that this will not end without violence. Hopefully, the bigots, racists, etc. will be the ones on the losing side.

Does Bannon really believe any of the stupid things he says? He seems like an agent of chaos, who just wants to stir things up for everyone. In many ways, he's more dangerous than the far-right loonies.

Maybe journalists will hold politicians to account, like they do in the Netherlands

Nyotarules, this is the third Trump/politics-related thread you've started in as many days (the "UK/US Special Relationship?" one is largely about him too), and despite the issues still being relevant, the specifics of the article deal with comments made by Trump's former adviser over four months ago, and it's hardly anything we didn't already know about the Trump administration or aren't already discussing in the two other threads you've got running about him.

I get that he's visiting the UK at the moment and being his usual "charming" self, but I don't want to see the forum taken over by a bunch of redundant Trump/political threads, especially not with the conclusion of the Midterms in the US coming up and the chaos that's likely to bring around here. There's only so much Trump negativity one can deal with at once, even if it's coming from someone opposed to it. So let's try and keep it contained to the two threads for now. This one's closed. Sorry.
