News Magnum PI preview video released

Well, I for one would much rather be watching a sequel, even if it's just in the form of a TV movie, but I'd think it would overshadow the cbs production which they wouldn't want, so I'm thinking it likely was canned and an agreement with the IP holders to go ahead with the reboot was put in place instead.

Or it would just be arms race to who can snag Tom first for a Cameo? That makes sense though as I thought it would be weird for both to be on screen at the same time but surely they must have known about the other so were both just confident that they could get to screen first or is the sequel hoping that the new one will blow so they could look even better by comparison. I don't think the sequel got as far as casting but some money must have been spent on it.

I'll grant them that with H5-0, it makes a bit more sense and it's a bit less critical since the roles aren't that specific, but with an iconic character such as Magnum, it becomes harder especially since a large part of its style was due to Tom Selleck himself. Seeing everything else looking like it could be Magnum P.I, but without Selleck is just bizzare. And the choices that they've made so far according to the trailer don't give me much confidence that they're being very respectful to the original. It looks and feels awkward.

Oh yeah they fail more than most, but I rather see a continuation than just a regular CBS drama with an 80s show name slapped on it.

You answered your own question there. CBS episodic procedural with an 80s show name slapped onto it for brand recognition.

By being a remake, they don't have to know anything about the previous show and can do whatever they want to. Thus no continuity or tone issues.
