Special relationship UK & US (a myth?)

Just heard Prime Minister May give a short speech mentioning 'special relationship' numerous times. Its a phrase British politicians (especially Tories) and the print media love to use. However I have a theory that this so called 'special relationship' is all in the head of deluded British politicians. Its more like a mistress waiting at home for the few secret meetings she can get from her married lover who has no intentions of leaving his wife.
How do my fellow Brits feel, how does the average American feel about it and how do non Brits and non Americans feel?

In America's relationship with Britain, Uncle Sam wears the pants. England has always followed the lead of the U.S. and why shouldn't it do? It's got everything to gain ...

Except our self respect. Believe it or not the world doesn't view the U.S as the centre of cultural and social progress, nor the arbiters of all that is good and moral

Why shouldn't it... Well, maybe to not be pressured into committing to a hugely expensive, poorly planned failure of a war with incoherent goals and based on phony intelligence. That seems like a pretty good reason to me.

It’s business isn’t, when it’s suits the money or the big guns, we’re best mates.

The US feeds in to our culture more that any other, it’s easy to watch something like Friends, or Elementary and forget that it’s foreign, but it is.

We’re allies in NATO and share a language and history, but I wouldn’t trust the US to come running to our help if we were invaded. We sound alike, and look alike, but attitudes to things like guns, and policing terrify me. My politics lean determinably to the right, but free health care is essential and vulnerable need protection, in America I’d be considered a staunch leftie.

But we have many similarities too, and the US is a force to be appreciated, but our interests are not the same, and the US calls the shots in any relationship, whatever they call it.

Your leaders know their wagon's hitched to a star. Like any marriage, there are problems to be worked out. But as long as the USA has nuclear-armed submarines, no country in its right mind is gonna screw with us. We're the world's cops. We're always there to save the day, when there's natural disasters and the American people are especially generous ... we always have been.

That's insane tripe.

No, not really. In fact many of us see your country as an aggressive, arrogant, warmongering, self serving, delusional joke that perceives itself as the cops of the world whilst being incapable of making the basics of your own society work.

But yeah, other than that, spot on!
