Trolling is a sophisticated sport on sites as well established as this one. We learned not to feed the trolls many moons ago.
That's right, 'second tier'. That's why they were still with Marvel. The company sold off it's first tier characters, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Hulk."Second tierI didn't say 'second rate, but in terms of popularity, second tier to ? Hulk and Captain America?
They were household names among comic book readers. However, the larger portion of the population, domestic, and (especially) foreign, had little to no knowledge of Cap, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, etc. I'm talking about the portion of the population that turned out and took the MCU movies from being just passably successful to blockbuster status.
And no, my mother knew NOTHING about any of these characters. You know, it never ceases to amaze me that there are people who think that just because you're communicating with them on the internet then , "duh huh, they must be just like me cause we're a' typin' at each other on the internet, duh huh".
Yeah, it's called marketing. Marvel knows how to introduce and break characters who have little to no name or sight recognition among the general population, which goes back to my original point.
I don't think so. Even his comic struggled for years at a time. Outside of comics circles he was pretty much unknown. And I say this a fan of Captain America for almost 50 years.
I don't think people knew his stories. But they knew him as a symbol.

I actually specifically stated the Hulk TV show because, duh huh, the show was very successful at the time and watched by people who didn't read or know anything about the comics. Duh huh. Like most of our parents, depending on age. Duh huh.
Awareness outside of comics was pretty low. He was never a symbol to much of anybody who didn't read comic. His non comics exposure were some cartoons in the Sixties and some real bad TV movies in the Seventies. He's not Uncle Sam or Lady Liberty.
I don't think people called Americans "Captain America" abroad because of Uncle Sam...
Never encountered that abroad or at home.
Can't speak for Americans, but over here I think twenty years ago most people would have said something like "isn't he like superman or something?"
In Germany Cap is so unpopular they changed the titles of "Captain America - The Winter Soldier" and "Captain America - Civil War" to "The First Avengers - Winter Soldier" and "The First Avenger - Civil War".

I think the idea Steve Rogers was somehow a sure thing based on his popularity is a little unrealistic, the whole MCU was a huge gamble from the word go and it's easy to forget how even the likes of Iron Man really were niche properties before it pushed them so forcefully into the spotlight.
He didn't even get his own movie
I've seen that in other european countries, too. I thought it was just standard continental distaste for blatantly nationalistic names, though.
Possibly, it's only really recently we've all developed a renewed taste for jingoism

Apparantly there's also a Captain Germany, aptly titled "Hauptmann Deutschland" who made some appereances in Captain America comics.
I'm not sure about how the film was titled elsewhere, but I'm pretty sure I read that Cap-dislike is the reason the film titles were changed. I also have to correct myself, the second movie was titled "Return of the First Avenger" not "First Avenger - Winter Soldier".

Well, I have also seen a 'Captain Holland' design as the mascot of a local comic-con. But they seem to have removed it from their website since last I looked, so I guess it wasn't that succesfull either.
