What the Internet thought about Sisko in 1994

I'm just glad it's above 300 baud now.

Ohhhh we used to DREAM of 300 baud! Woulda' been a palace to us. We used to connect at 110 baud from a Commodore PET, in a library on a rubbish tip. We got access every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us by the SYSOP! 300 baud!? Hmph.

Due to lousy politics of a TV station in my country which cancelled DS9 after one season and due to the fact that I did find a way to watch Voyager in 1998, I never read the threads on the forums back then because I didn't want to spoil the fun with watching the episodes. I started to read about Voyager and comment the show when I started watching it. Therefore I didn't know anything about the debate about Sisko back then.

The only thing I remember from those days was the total hatred against Wesley Crusher, something that I did find almost disgusting. I wasn't a fan of Wesley back then. I found him slightly annoying but I didn't hate or dislike the character.

But when I saw all those hate posts against Wesley, I actually started to like him!
Sometimes hate campaigns have an opposite effect on me.

How is it pretentious to have a black man or a woman as the lead character? That makes no sense whatsoever. There's nothing pretentious about variety. Both actors were great in the roles regardless of race or gender. If adding diversity to the franchise leads is a problem for some then perhaps Star Trek is not for them.

There are certain segments of the white male population that see a strong white male as a default and any alternative to that as a politically motivated assault on their God given right to have all the privileges and have everything of importance be about them.

You had PETs?? Luxury! When I started out it was on paper copy TTY 33's that we got cast off from companies that wore them out and MOVED ON to Commodore PETs! The teletypes didn't even have the lowercase option! The whole room together sounded like a diesel locomotive hauling a train of coal cars up a hill at 50 mph. PETs, wow!

Okay, well I don't even know what the hell you guys are talking about!

I had to read stuff that was printed on paper.
The pictures were still and didn't move at all.

You could tear a Page out of a magazine and tape it to your actual wall inside your room!

And we wrote on paper too with pens that dispersed actual ink from the end!
And I can write in cursive script!

So there.

Well, when I say Commodore PET it was only a picture of one stapled to a binder...but it was a PET to us!

All right, let me see if this works:

ROTFLMAO !
What is that?
How old are you???
Does it write onto a stone tablet!

That is a teletype! That is how we communicated with the computer in the old days. Type on the keyboard, what we type goes on the paper, the computer cogitates for a while and responds also by typing on the paper. That thing to the left of the keyboard should be a paper tape reader-punch, for mass storage. Of course WE didn't have one, we just WISHED we had paper tape reader-punches! :)

Let's just say I'm old enough to remember the events Assignment: Earth is based on.

So Obi-wan do we have to be respectful of your age and all now?:nyah:

It's nice to know people are judgemental, prejudiced assholes no matter what decade they live in or what series they want to bash.

ST fans are not immune to being racists and misogynists.

Luxury.
We had to do play all our games an an antikythera device with no supper, and when we got home, Ceaser would kill us.

Well we had it tough.

We used to have to reboot the Babbage Engine at twelve o'clock at night, and lick the server room fans clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold coffee beans, worked twenty-four hours a day at the call-center, and when we got home, our SYSOP would permaban us to death with painfully worded flames.

Or any kind of fans, especially since everyone is a fan of something. You don't hear much about those racist candy loving fans though you just assume the number of people who like candy in the world that more than a few of them are racists. Only difference is tv and movies deal with representation and idea's so they become things that are easier to trigger people. One thing I have noticed is not many people alive like to every have their views challenged in anyway but that to me goes beyond mere fandom of a tv show or movie. Nerd fandom gets a little bit of a unfair treatment as if racism only exists in fandom and hardly anywhere else. I think society has finally come to terms that everything is poltical and everything might be tainted by racism were in the past people, even good people were more in denial.

See, I find this interesting. I am a new ST fan and don't think fandom describes me. I like the shows, but I am not immersed in them nor do I participate in anything Star Trek other than this forum.

I have always thought of Star Trek fandom as being more evolved and progressive than the general public. I don't think I am alone in this. It has been eye opening to see that that is not necessarily true.
