Marvel Phase 4 Will Introduce More Female Heroes - Kevin Feige

I'll believe it when Stormbreaker Jane, Lady Hulk, the Brie Larson Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Wasp etc all become the focus as a New Avengers group to stop whatever renewed Kree/Skrull etc thrat breaks out post loss of Nova Corps.

A different route wouldn't have likely been as successful.

For the MCU to be as great as it is now, it wasn't an easy task. Every key decision mattered, and in retrospect, every decision was correct.

Unravelling that tapestry would lead to less than successful results. See the other studios who have attempted franchises like this and failed at it.
The MCU is definitely a success, but I don't think that it is perfect and that a female-led movie would have definitely made it into less of a success.

ETA: Yikes, what was I writing :D Changed wording of the end of the sentence.

Marvel definitely had to earn the right and trust of the audience before doing something as obscure as Guardians of the Galaxy.

We've also reached the point now where they've earned enough audience trust to do Captain Marvel and go full cosmic and weird.

It would have. At least back then. The timing wasn't right for it.

And the MCU is as close to perfect as you can ask for. Critical, audience and fan approval 20 films in. And 4 Billion this year alone, which is unprecedented for any franchise.

In many ways, I think the MCU is too successful at this point. The bar just keeps being raised.

To be fair, both of those were introduced long after the MCU started, but we could get some in the future maybe :)

But could easily have made appearances along the way.

But it's safer to stick with the men you see, women will accept male leads, whereas an awful lot of men have hissy fits over female ones.

Thor 4 will happen. Taika and Chris are on fire after Ragnarok and up for more, plus they introduced Korg, Valkyrie and still need to resolve the New Asgard story. Thor Ragnarok was too much of a hit to abandon it now.

Iron Man 3 is still the second most successful solo movie in the MCU after Black Panther. It didn't lead to Iron Man 4. And Korg is a funny side character, not a driving force for another movie, Valkyrie could easily transition to other movies (like those new Guardians I mentioned) and the need to go off and build a new Asgard is actually a really logical reason for Thor to leave.

Different does mean worse when the chances of joining the 2 billion dollar club, which Marvel just joined for a film are VERY slim.

If Marvel had done anything differently in the previous phases, we likely wouldn't be at this level of success now.

You're underestimating how difficult it is to accomplish what only Marvel Studios has accomplished.

I think you're underestimating the success of Marvel Studios' talent and process. They didn't HAVE to tell THIS specific story to be successful. All they had to do was follow the same principles and hire the right people for the job (which is clearly Marvel's biggest strength).

We're getting one, aren't we? So it's all good.

BTW, female-led superhero movies can both be hits (Wonder Woman) and catastrophic bombs (Catwoman). Execution is all that really matters in the end.

Bullocks. You have no idea if a different route would've worked or not. No one of us do because it didn't happen.

This is precisely the problem that's been systemic for decades: Underestimating the interest and quality of female characters in any property simply because they're not men.

Maybe but that's a strawman argument of the first degree. We aren't talking about obscure, we are talking about female. You seem to have an almost paranoid need to defend a movie franchise which is socially decades behind it's source material. Comic fans have long been swinging in favour of gender equality (numerically at least) and the published material has both reflected and driven that.

The movies have been reaping the benefits of that without taking any risks of their own.

Well, I'd prefer more than one out of how ever many movies the next phase consists of to have a female lead (two, I guess since we'll get Ant-Man & the Wasp) but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

BTW, female-led superhero movies can both be hits (Wonder Woman) and catastrophic bombs (Catwoman). Execution is all that really matters in the end.
This is definitely true.

Iron Man 4 could be part of Phase 4, just wait and see. Iron Man is too big an IP to sit on the sidelines. Iger and Disney will want more of the character after the success of IM3.

Hemsworth and Taika's comments (especially Taika who is still very close with the Marvel brass and ready to direct more) really hint that Thor 4ever is a go. Like I said, it doesn't make sense to end Thor now, he's too big of a central important figure in the MCU, and his director can definitely bring more to the table.

The biggest part of Marvel Studio's success and 'talent' is Kevin Feige. And the way he handled everything, that made all sides at Disney happy, that made Marvel happy....and ultimately made audiences and fans happy and the MCU successful is the best outcome we could have hoped for.

It's silly to say he could have easily gone a different way and the success would be the same.

Again, you're underestimating how nearly impossible this task was that they've accomplished.

Oh, so one should be enough and we should all shut up? That kind of argument is just like saying "Oh, Catwoman and Elektra were garbage and bombed, so we shouldn't make anymore female superhero films because clearly they can't be done or be well-received."

Oh, wait. That's exactly the argument that was used.

Which has more to do with RDJ wanting to wrap up his commitments than anything else.

Iron Man 3 was 5 years ago. They could've easily made Iron Man 4 as part of Downey's extended contract rather than, say, his extended appearance in a Spider-man movie. Marvel chose not to.

No, it's biggest success was Feige's ability to hire the right people again and again and keep them all on the same page narratively. That was not dependent on which story was being told.

How about Iron Heart? Kamala Khan?
Just to be argumentative both of those are "spin offs" of other characters so surely you would have to set them up first. Especially Khan, whose predecessor hasn't had a movie yet.

Okay slightly off topic here but as someone who hasn't read much Carol Danvers is anyone else worried they are going to make her a little too OP in her upcoming movie. Like I get she's like uber but the way some people are talking about her makes me think that they're expecting her to come and one hit Thanos. Is she that strong in the comics? I always took Hulk as like the top with maybe Thor or Sentry just below with maybe Carol on this level or there abouts. Maybe a little below. As I say I haven't read much of her stuff, last time I picked up her book she was still Ms so I'm genuinely asking here.
As for a BW movie, and I'm grasping at straws here, I think there was plans for her like just after Iron Man two, but then the luke warm reception to that plus ScarJo was busy with a project right after meant that it got tabled.

However if we're now just gonna spitball female Marvel movies that would have fit in early in the series I'm gonna add; Spider Woman as she could have added to the whole Hydra plot line, Lionheart cos I like captain Britan and she could have spun off into that with maybe Brian and Meggan already King and Queen of Otherworld and or Monica Rambeau. Call her Photon or something to save the name for Carol.

Cool story, but the same applies to your perspective on the issue. You're jumping into the realm of fanfiction, very unlikely fanfiction TBH.

What we have now works, and fires on all cylinders. MCU has been a massive success and accomplished everything any studio could hope for. As close to perfection for audiences, fans and execs as we're ever going to get.

So why mess with success?

Very true, but as a result of the comics having modernised and moved with the times. That hard work has been done, the MCU could easily have capitalised on that.

Sometimes....as with many top end characters she's often inconsistently written in order to allow a story and challenge to be feasible.

I've read most of her original ongoing and she seemed fairly strong but definitely not Hulk level strong. Of course that was at the very beginning of her career, so chances are she got a lot more powerful later on.

Monica Rambeau. Call her Photon or something to save the name for Carol.
I'd love Monica Rambeau appearing. But she definitely has to be called Captain Marvel, taking the title from Carol. Then comes the son of Mar-Vell and you can see where I'm going with this :D
