Actually the scene only played out like that because Harrison Ford was sick and they had to wrap it up as soon as possible.

Yeah, it was actually supposed to be a long complicated sword fight, but Harrison Ford was really sick and he asked Spielberg if he could just pull out his gun and shoot him, and Spielberg loved the idea.
