It certainly is! Interesting that I don't think it's been mentioned once in the 4 Disney offerings. The mines of Kessel are spice mines. C-3P0 drops that nugget in A New Hope.

They're going to have to re-dub that line so Threepio fears being sent to the Coaxium mines of Kessel.
At least it's still established to be a place of great suffering for Droids.
Thank the Maker for the small things.

Could it be that they have spice mines and coaxium mines on Kessel? We do mine many things here on Earth. Not just... say... coal.

Mmmm. That's a good point - despite the planets of Star Wars having a tendency to have no geographical variations!

We've stumbled onto something here .... I really think Disney doesn't want to glamorize intergalactic drug use.

While I do understand what they were trying to do there, it seemed a little strange to have an entire desert planet (with blue skies, nonetheless), a snow planet, a jungle planet, a forest moon. Are there no temperate or cold zones on these planets?

Yet, Dumbo and alcohol are okay. ;)

That's what I was kinda thinking when I was watching the movie. But since there is absolutely no mention of Spice in the entire film, I get the feeling it was a deliberate change on Disney's part.
Otherwise, Dryden could have just wanted a shipment of Spice. That actually would have made more sense than Jet fuel.

That would make a ton more sense, for sure. It would mean that Enfys Nest (if she was a character at all) would have had a different story than the start of a Rebel sect. Surely the Rebels wouldn't be after a dangerous narcotic like spice. Perhaps in a previous draft, it was Boba Fett. If that's the case, I'm glad that changed. His appearance might have been a step too far for me with all of the references.

Or, it's a minor detail in a throwaway line that doesn't mean a whole lot.

"Spice mines of Kessel" doesn't needs its own film.

I don't think them retrieving Coaxium (or whatever the fuck it was) some how precludes there being Spice mines on Kessel. Kessel may be more famous for the drugs it produces, but it can do more than one thing.

Not it can't! How dare you! ;)

The second Delta Vega in the Abrams films really just pissed me off at first. Then someone brought up the very salient point that in the US, many cities share common names. And I thought: "that makes a whole lot of sense". I still didn't like it, but it wasn't the universe-shattering hole I wanted it to be.

I guess we just live and (if we want to) learn.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but maybe spice is the drug, as in the old SW EU. Hopefully I will see it this weekend, then I'll actually know what I'm talking about.

It is definitely worth seeing. Doesn't reinvent the wheel, but is a fun action movie.

They even mentions the spice mining operations on Kessel in Solo. just they added the Coaxium mining as a secondary thing (which would interest the Empire and thus keep the spice flowing). Coaxium being is they could have something to use multiple times in the story for Han to have as a thing to trade (but not need himself), a means of boosting the engines at the Maw, and something for an early group of Rebels would be after seriously (Rebels after spice would just be for remarket value...Coaxium could not only be used in new rebel ships, but also directly hurt the Empire by denying them the resource.)

Q'ira's cover story was about some high flouting Admiral/Province wanting to trade with the Pikes, slaves for spice.

Oh spice is definitely used as a drug and the Pykes don't just trade in it, they also partake. Given that they're able to to that with out major problems tells me that the effects are pleasant but not debilitatingly so. Addictive, but only so far as any pleasurable experience is. And safe enough that short of an overdose, it won't kill.

It's basically space cannabis.

While it hasn't been said in the films, canon materials, including the 'Clone Wars' TV series have mentioned spice being used as a drug, and being made on Kessel.

I've only seen it once, but I thought there was a line about the Coaxium being "deep beneath the mines of Kessel" Implying that those mines hold something else.

Maybe spice is just a spice. Spice trade on the real planet Earth was both highly profitable and very risky business:

Hell. The procurement and trade of it, was one of the motivations behind Britain being a real ‘Evil Empire.’ It literally played a part is shaping the entire world.

Which is particularly ironic, if you’ve ever actually tasted any traditional ‘British’ food.
