but lacks teeth because its more "what we would like to see" which--in consideration of gun support in the U.S.--does not have a real world (rather, American-based) possibility for the chief concern of commercial gun manufacturing/access.

Actually, support for stricter gun controls is really high in the US, it's a myth that the public are against it.

Actually, support for stricter gun controls is really high in the US, it's a myth that the public are against it.

That's true. NRA basically controls most politicans so nothing gets done. I guess President Lynda Carter looks bad once again because of a methphor on the show. You would think she would want to do something about the issue and if it's Congress that is stopping things from getting done it means that things like this and the other times where the Trumpian Speaker of House seems to get his way must mean he has even more power than she does.

Actually Superman kind of looks bad as well. Why hasn't Superman who has been around for awhile been able to make a better world at this point. Especially since we know he tossed all their Nukes into space I assume.

Uhm... truth and justice are liberal causes...

No they aren't. I don't want to get too political, but the left hardly has the monopoly on right and wrong. Far from it. By making that statement, you are mistakenly, wrongfully, and offensively implying the conservatives do not belief in truth and justice, which is about as far from reality as you can get.

I'm going to assume that was not what you are implying. I hope I am right there.

Anyway, the way Supergirl beats you over the head with liberal propaganda, the show is NOT focusing on a hero who fights for truth and justice. They are focusing on writers that want to campaign for the democrat party, and that's just not right.

In his first adventure, Superman saved an innocent from the death penalty, fought domestic violence, investigated corrupt politicians and lobbyists, went after an arms manufacturer and ended a war in South America instigated by American economic interests. Just sayin'.

None of those are liberal issues. Not one. No conservative wants to wrongfully convict an innocent to death. No conservative favors domestic violence. No conservative wants illegal arms out there, and as much as you may not believe it, no conservative wants a war solely for economic purposes.

Just sayin'.

I'm not sure it's really asking much for TV to be just a little bit cerebral to be honest. We had years of on screen superheroes being dumbed down compared to their paper counterparts and frankly we aren't exactly talking about War and Peace here, just an acknowledgement that even the most mundane of shows aren't made in a vacuum.

"Truth and justice" aren't just rescuing people from falling off cliffs and stopping supervillains then making speeches about being polite and how bullying is bad, vacuous easy morality that challenges precisely no one and nothing. They are ideas whose meaning are in dispute, which need exploring because we live in fractured times. Once upon a time it was enough to have superman (or supergirl) be a champion of "the American Way" without actually asking what that meant, but not any more.

This isn't cerebral. This is outright, one sided, propaganda, which not only shills for one side of the political spectrum, it demonizes the other. It also isn't dumbing down to stay clear of politics on a superhero show.

They aren't exploring any ideas. They are taking their own political agenda, and wrongfully inserting it into the show. Almost every Alex plot line for example, has no relevance to the story as a whole, and has no place on a superhero show, like Alex's whole romance story last season. We get it, she was gay. Who cares? To dedicate virtually half a season on Supergirl's sister's romance, even if she were straight, was a colossal waste of time. If they want to make a show about Alex's love life, do a spin off, but that's not what a superhero show is about.

They also have blatantly insulted Trump and any conservative supporters. It's a terrible weakness of the show, because when the show doesn't do that, it's terrific.

Just stick to superhero stories.

I don't want to be lectured on guns or whatever outrage of the week the writers are feeling.

Oh, and by the way, about the only thing fantastical about the episode's gun whining was the idea that taking guns away from cops is a good thing. Only in a fictional world will that work.

Well, this week's episode pushed me over the edge. As someone who has read and loved the Superman and Supergirl characters for nearly 40 years, I watched the show for the past three years but I'm done. The leftist propaganda on the show has gotten entirely out of control.

So often that "other" powerful weapon... the spoken word, is ignored to our detriment and then the gun is just a cheat.

The spoken word will not work on everyone, so J'onn's scene with the man was plot/message convenience. In reality, talking was not going to work on--for example--Twymon Meyers (one of several early 1970s Black Liberation Army assassins) decided to shoot it out with FBI agents & police officers, as he was not going to be taken alive only to be charged with the 1972 murders of 2 police officers. Meyers' behavior was not rare. The point being that in tense situations where life hangs in the balance--or a threat to public safety is not contained, there may not be the perfect window of time or psychological environment (of the shooter) to be talked down, particularly when they're determined to kill no matter the personal cost.

Further, if you are a private citizen and faced with an armed person or people breaking into your home to rob you or worse, are you going to attempt to talk them down as they're rushing in on you, and you cannot escape out of window or back door? Will you have enough time to call the police---and hope they respond in time? What are you going to do? What are you prepared to do?

President Obama was constantly stymied by the obstructionists in Congress. It's amazing he managed to achieve as much as he did given that relentless resistance. It was merely a fraction of what he tried to achieve.

Despite the current officeholder's aspirations, the President is not a dictator. Constitutionally, Congress is supposed to be the branch that defines the laws and policies of the nation, with the executive branch carrying them out (hence its name). Modern presidents have taken a much more central role in shaping US policy, but they're not supposed to have unfettered power to impose their will. Checks and balances are what have kept American democracy intact so far, and hopefully will continue to do so.

In Marsdin's case, I'd imagine that alien amnesty act used up a lot of her political capital, especially with the Daxamite invasion happening on her watch less than a year later.

Actually Superman kind of looks bad as well. Why hasn't Superman who has been around for awhile been able to make a better world at this point.

What was that line in the movie about not interfering in human destiny?

Besides, Superman stories haven't always been set in idealized worlds. The '40s radio version of Metropolis was nearly as fraught with political corruption and gangs as the post-Frank Miller Gotham City.

To Kirk Prime, re conservative devotion to truth: am I wrong that conservatives just elected a president who is an inveterate, serial, pathological liar -- and well known as such, even among all but the most deluded of his base? Where's the respect for truth in that?

I also wonder, if justice is important to you, why "Social Justice Warrior" is a term of scorn and disgust rather than approbation?

No conservative wants to wrongfully convict an innocent to death.

Some do, but crucially most liberals do not want to convict anyone to death, you know with it being an outdated barbaric idea that doesn't work?

No conservative favors domestic violence.

Yet you voted for a POTUS who not only admits to sexual assault but boasts about it.

No conservative wants illegal arms out there

True, you wan them to be legal, cause "freedom"

no conservative wants a war solely for economic purposes.

Strange how often it happens then.

Strangely that scenario virtually never happens in countries without guns.

Not convict anyone to death, except for babies apparently. Sadly, that barbaric idea isn't outdated.

I see you are of the school of thought that medical evidence doesn't matter and a foetus is a living baby from the moment of conception, jolly good.

No they aren't.

Yes they are.

like Alex's whole romance story last season. We get it, she was gay. Who cares? To dedicate virtually half a season on Supergirl's sister's romance, even if she were straight, was a colossal waste of time.

I'm noticing you're not complaining about Supergirl's straight romance(s), Martian Manhunter's straight romance, Winn's straight romance, James and Lena's straight romance...

You apparently only have a problem with one romance, Alex's... what is the difference, hmmm, what on earth could it possibly be...

There you go. To answer your question, you are completely wrong. And given that liberals just nominated Hillary Clinton, the idea of talking about anyone else as a pathological liar is almost comical. Anyone who voted for Hillary has no business complaining about anyone being a liar.

Maybe because "Social Justice Warrior," is nothing more than outrage of the week, usually expressed behind a keyboard. And usually it's just trying to force liberal causes down people's throats, and doesn't actually accomplish any social justice.

That's again, not true. Name one conservative who knowingly will condemn an innocent to death. It's not like they want to murder babies or anything.

Yet you voted for a POTUS who not only admits to sexual assault but boasts about it.

Again, not true. Unlike Bill Clinton, who actually DID commit several assaults, you are simply stating something factually false. But the left lost the right to complain about sexual assaults in politics when they continued to support Bill Clinton and later, his accomplice wife. Not to mention decades of Ted Kennedy to name one.

None of the above took up half a season. Let's use James and Lena since this was the closest. I realize the chip on your shoulder wants you to think it has to do with Alex being gay, but there is a huge difference besides orientation in James/Lena. Alex's romance took up far more screen time and we had to deal with a good 20 minutes or more per episode of Alex whining about her dating life, or 20 minutes of her being happy. It didn't really matter, because that was 20 minutes that had nothing to do with Supergirl.

James/Lena, and all of the other examples are just a little character development and way on the side. Alex/Maggie was a big deal because the writers kept making it that way. But it should have been much further in the background. So sorry to knock you off the soapbox, but it wasn't that it was a gay romance. It was that it was a gay romance that took up far too much time to the detriment of the show. If it were a straight romance, it wouldn't have had so much screen time but again, it was about liberal causes, nothing more.

Ummmmm, have you read any history books?

Yes true and what Bill Clinton did in office has nothing to do with the fact you guys voted Trump in knowing he boasted about sexual assault.

And yes he did, on record. Numerous times.

Yes. Doesn't answer my question.

And yes he did, on record. Numerous times.

What assault? First, if you are talking about the "grab them" line, he wasn't talking about anyone specific. It was a generic comment about how women threw themselves at him, which happened. That's not an assault. Unlike Clinton, who was an actual sexual predator. Numerous times.

It did not, it just poked you in the eye more for some reason.

Um, just because you want something to be true doesn't mean it is. That storyline dominated the show for a full season.

How further back would you have liked? Like, out of the frame completely?

Well, given that it had no relevance to Supergirl, and no relevance to the big bad that season, much further back. Like it should have lasted a few episodes, and maybe a scene or two--like pretty much every other romance on that show. I wonder what was so different that they felt the need to shove this irrelevant relationship on the viewer.

But we aren't talking about Clinton, what he did doesn't make Trump boasting about sexual assault ok. He was voted in by a public largely unaware of that behaviour, whereas everyone already knew exactly what Trump is and yet you voted for him anyway. That's the key point here.

What Clinton did was terrible, but that isn't the point. This isn't tit for tat about whose President was worse, I'm not even a US citizen. What this is about is conservatives happily cheering for a man who encapsulates everything they claim to stand against and voting for a man who doesn't even try to pretend he isn't a sexual predator because he can get away with it.

Yes. Doesn't answer my question.

Conservatives who've knowingly had innocent people put to death?

Um, other than throughout feudalism, the crusades, the british empire, slavery and the holocaust?

How many liberals have done similar things?

That storyline dominated the show for a full season.

It didn't. No more than J'onn's dealing with his father's illness this season, which you know...

given that it had no relevance to Supergirl

...also has "no relevance" to Supergirl. Does M'rynn's story also bother you?

maybe a scene or two

But what if Supergirl herself had come out as gay, then you'd be okay with a long lesbian romance, right?

But what if Supergirl herself had come out as gay, then you'd be okay with a long lesbian romance, right?

I think that would throw half the nerd world into total disarray.....

"She's a gurl.....and she's, y'know, not a damsel....and she, er, "eats noodles", but how does it advance the story? I'm not sexist or homophobic and I don't mind if it adds something to the ........OMG what am I looking at????"

And usually it's just trying to force liberal causes down people's throats, and doesn't actually accomplish any social justice.

.

Stating facts - or even expressing opinions - does not equate to "shoving ideas down people's throats," as you've repeatedly pushed this rhetoric throughout the entirety of this thread. This argument gets tiresome that it almost borders on trolling. As I stated earlier in the thread, no one is pushing an agenda or even forcing you to accept some liberal ideals.

Your problem is that you can't stand anyone who disagrees with you. Liberals and Democrats be damned! The notion that anyone finds the Orange Man in the White House deplorable is offensive to you, whereas conservatives have been trashing Obama and the Clintons for ages. You go apeshit at the mention of gun control and gay relationships and women's rights. "OMFG!!!!! I'M GETTING BRAINWASHED BY TEH ULTRA LIBERAL SHOW SUPER GIRLLLLLLL!!!"

I'm thankful to Trump. He made a Democrat out of me in 2016.

OMG! Whoa whoa whoa!! I tune in to talk about Supergirl, a TV series that has much potential, and I see endless debate about politics throughout this thread!..

sigh.. Both the left and right have permeated all aspects of Media.. Now you can't enjoy a damn program without SJW crap being force fed at you, or Neocon angst coming from the other side.. it's annoying that Hollywood and TV have decided the 2016 election and debate should continue in pop culture. I long for the days when a show was just a show, and they played it down the middle with their political slants.. Now it's 95% left, and 5% right.. Which causes all these media sources to have endless bitch fests about it, and then the other side retaliates and then there's a big thing, with jerks and condescending elite fakes with blogs and columns making it worse with snarky titles and abject hatred. I used to tune into TV shows to escape the political back and forth, or comics. Now it's all politics and race this, gender that, sexuality this, I'm this first (superficially) and that. It's rotten and doesn't allow anyone anymore an escape from the divisiveness of politics or showcase how each individual is more then just a simple identity label.

Heck you can't make a simple critique now without there being an inference by some Judge-jury-and executioner keyboard jocky that there is some kind of hidden nefarious motivator behind it! I'm sure I'll be attacked for bemoaning the current political identity infusion into almost anything (except food, thank god that form of self gratification is untouched, along with the baking cook off shows)

The invasion of Politics in the Pop Culture realm tho always present is now openly braggadocios and up front and in your face, all I can do now is just tune out, or seek like minded people to engage with who could care less who is president, how or if you can buy a gun, who doesn't care what you do in a bedroom, or what form of philosophy you adhere to as a human being. There's this obsession with this stuff, and it's killing the fun in entertainment.

Sorry for my rant.. But I just thought at least here, in this thread there was maybe some discussion on where Supergirl goes from here, and if Krypton is part of the same reality, or is it another version of reality within the multiverse established by the Flash universe..

anyhow.. Carry on discussing crap that people discuss on the news.. If you want that why not watch the news, or join a political chat website? Why do we see this political back and forth everywhere. Used to be the subject material was more important. Star Wars, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Marvel COMICS, DC Comics, and various other TV series.. It's sad really. No one can speak their mind, without the names coming out, the political slants coming out, and the intolerance of others opinions.

I hope to find a genre that has yet to be infected by this bickering, and souring of the enjoyment and fun in entertainment. right now, it's a pretty piss poor landscape out there. Too many Woke themes, and not enough fantasy or science fiction drama. Now sadly it's just political and vitriolic.
