Some fans consider Tico the 'Jar Jar Binks' of the sequels and unfortunately their negativity and harassment has upset Kelly Marie Tran.

Interesting that the SW fandom has reached this point.

I thought Rose was great. I loved every minute of what she did. Ever-focused on what was important, she brought heart, comic relief, and poignancy. Tran's portrayal was outstanding. I wouldn't want TLJ to exist without her performance or without the character.

It's unfortunate that, as a self-described Star Wars fan, I have to suffer nominal association with assholes who'd engage in the sort of vile behavior that has motivated Tran to pull the plug on her account.

The issue with her seems to really be exactly the ongoing issue with pretty much any female character.

She is female, she is part of an agenda, yadda yadda.

That gives pathetic self entitled pricks the right to ruin her life, destroy the pride she should be feeling in the greatest achievement of her career, make her retreat from the world, put her in her place.

Sickening.

Yep I hope this doesn't ruin the chances of the Tico spinoff movie.

Oh well, there's still the TV version of her character on Star Trek Discovery:

From the vox.com link:
Kelly Marie Tran, the first woman of color to hold a major onscreen role in the Star Wars franchise, has deleted all of her Instagram posts after months of racist and sexist harassment from Star Wars fans.
...

And from the indiewire.com link:
... Angry “Star Wars” fans have criticized Tran’s appearance and racial identity, plus the fact that her character represents another woman in a major role in a “Star Wars” film. The harassment extended to the “Star Wars” Wookieepedia website, where people altered the Rose Tico page to feature racist language.

As an Asian-American myself, I find this latest bout of vitriol from "fandom" particularly despicable and heinous.

To be fair, this Asian actor (Donnie Yen) didn't receive negative harassment:

Probably because his character was actually cool.

I don't think the fans are targeting Asians specifically. If Rose was played by a White actress of similar appearance, she'd still be hated.

I'm hardly seeing anything being more "fair" as a result of this. Even if it isn't because she's asian or because she's female, or because she's a combination that represents a double whammy, nothing whatsoever makes that sort of personal abuse "fair". Her character may not be "cool", but that doesn't make her fair game.

None of that makes it ok. It wasn't ok with Jake Lloyd, it isn't ok now. The fact that this "fandom" (and I use the term loosely) is pushing a person away is dangerous and disgusting and will only encourage more of such behavior.

Just looking at the glass half full. We've had minority actors and characters in Star Wars before that have been received well by the fans. Just keep that in mind when certain outlets go totally hyperbolic here and paint SW fans as completely racist. It just isn't the case.

To be fair, it's ALWAYS been at this point (Star Trek fandom too BTW). the current ease of access to, and anonymity afforded in today's modern social media just makes it easier for this small subset of such randoms to coordinate and fully express their negative views and attack with no RL consequences to speak of.

LOL. Jake Lloyd, wow. Yeah... I forgot about him for a while but I remember reading he got it bad. Sadly Lucas is to blame for that, not Lloyd. Just as Kathleen and Johnson are to blame for Tico, not Tran.

Apparently Jake Lloyd quit acting after being bullied:

Maybe not racist, maybe just sexist.

Maybe not all, maybe just some.

It's besides the point really, the point is people's lives, careers and mental health should not be ruined in this way, even if it is by a small minority. This isn't about tarring a fandom, it's about how social media allows people to effectively touch the actors and producers involved in making films, allows them a means to act towards them which would have been criminal offences otherwise.

No, no one is to blame for bullying a person but themselves. Don't care how poor their performance is, how poorly received their character is. People are responsible for their actions-period.

My point was that the producers and director are to blame for the character being received so poorly, not the acting "talent"

Sorry, but self-described Star Wars fans who would post racist language are in fact being racist, full stop. There's literally nothing hyperbolic about referring to them as racists. It makes little difference whether those people are completely racist or merely racist. Such fans don't, however, speak for Star Wars fans as a whole.

I've boldfaced the part of your post in which there's arguably grammatical ambiguity with respect to whether to read it as "paint some SW fans as completely racist" or "paint all SW fans as completely racist."

It would indeed be absurd to take these racists to be speaking for all of fandom. To avoid the association, it's incumbent upon those of us who think their statements are vile to reject and disown them publicly. It's not my duty to chase after and disown all such statements individually, so consider this my blanket condemnation, that I'm sad to say that I expect to find reason to renew in the not-too-distant future.

Received poorly? Maybe. Bullying? No, not even a little bit. There are no excuses for this type of behavior, no one else to blame. The individuals who did so are personally responsible. Let's not shift blame here.
