After TLJ, Is "Franchise Fatigue' now Plaguing Star Wars?

With "Solo" about to underperform by a significant margin, industry trades and YT commentators have explained the disinterest in Solo as "Franchise Fatigue" for Star Wars.

If this is true... what caused it? Who is to blame?

Did the divisiveness over TLJ sour general audiences on Star Wars?

Between the toys not selling and the BO numbers now being so low (no pun intended), it seems like fans and audience interest is trending downwards at a significant rate.

But why? Discuss.

There's no such thing as "franchise fatigue".

Of course there is. Were you around in the 1990s? 7 years of TNG + however many of DS9 + the drag that was Voyager.... That's the dictionary definition of franchise fatigue.

I was a huge Trekkie in my youth, but even that onslaught made me give up watching.

There can be. Especially if previous installments are divisive or terrible.

Justice League bombing theatrically was definitely a result of audiences' apathy after BVS.
To be fair, BvS was terrible and word of mouth for Justice League was terrible.

I think it is. Also I think it goes beyond the movies and i'm not talking just about the tv shows and books and stuff like that. I think the internet focus on this stuff wears people down as well. It can get tiring to go on Youtube and having endless debates and theories about Star Wars. Endless Debates about the nerd stuff and endless debates about politics stuff as well. I hate to say this but I think the internet and social media has kind of drained some of the fun out of being a nerd for many. It was better maybe when nerd stuff was more niche and something the mainstream didn't really embrace. We have basically overdosed on our own geekiness. But like any addict we know we can't stop!

It's not franchise fatigue (yet), it's failure to listen. Solo standalone was simply not a movie most fans wanted, and neither is Fett.

Comparing Solo's box-office run to Justice League's over the next few weeks should be very interesting. Two days into release it's already trailing by $10 million.

There's a balance in listening to what fans want and not listening. If you do exactly what fans want, you get garbage, because fans don't know jackshit about good writing or characters. However, if your entire fanbase is screaming for an Obi-Wan movie, and you just don't listen and go ahead with a movie about a glorified background prop, you're fucking up.....

Solo, I admit, I didn't want as well. Haven't seen it, but the trailers made it look a lot better than I thought it could be. So here's hoping.

As for fatigue.....
When Disney announced a new trilogy, I was super excited. Still am. I liked TLJ. I was also looking forward to Rogue One, and really loved that. Then....
Then came the announcement for a trilogy set in a different part (and perhaps era) of the galaxy. Then, they want a trilogy for Disney's new streaming service. Then, a live action series was announced. Then, Fett was announced....
We're getting to the point of fatigue, yes. I'm not nearly as interested in Star Wars as I was 2 years ago. I mean, last night my girlfriend and I decided to get out for dinner and then a movie. As much as we both really enjoy Star Wars, we decided Deadpool was the better choice here. And this from a die-hard Star Wars fan for what, 25 years now.

I guess the only choice is to turn it back over to George Lucas. Get ride of the CGI and return to models and go old school on a new SW's movie! It's time to take away the money and have people think of creative ways of telling stories.

I like the movie, but I don't really think it needed to be made. It was interesting and nice to see, but if it didn't exist I'd be fine. It feels like a Star Wars novel that was self contained.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I think some of this stuff will be looked at more fondly in the future after Star Wars goes away again for a few years. I don't expect a big gap but I could see it going away for maybe 5 years or so. I think the only real lock right now would be part 3 of the main saga movies. I also think we know one place it will eventually lead and that is a reboot or remake of the Classic films. A new canon and everything. Also a screenjunkies person already made the joke but I we might as well sort of repeat it and the joke being about who will be picked to replace Mangold once he gets fired. What percentage of Fett movie will even be stuff he films, if that movie happens.

The difficulty for the studio is they literally cannot satisfy all the fans. For every one who says that Rogue One, Solo or Fett should never be movies as you're diluting the universe and telling stories of non-important events, you have ten who probably are enraged that their favourite legends novel isn't being made into a film or show.

But what if you don't even know what a legends novel is? I got admit I think I have read two Star Wars books my entire life. One was I started off those books about a Thrawn guy I think he was called, set after the Classic movies but I never finsihed them. Then I read the X-Wings comics that focused on Wedge. Who I am sure they re also planning a movie about as well. I'm more excited about the potential of a Dax movie. I want to know why he was so pumped that day he felt he could take on the entire Empire.

I asume you've seen the prequels right?? George doesn't care about models. He cares about visuals. If CGI is the best toy in town to do that, that's the toy he'll use.

I know. Lucas if giving control would have to be told to use models though and not CGI even if he wants it. Except maybe in small doses
