Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Thanks for that, @GNDN18. Bread and Circuses is one of those episodes I have rarely seen.

I actually started this project with lens flares turned on and with higher bloom settings, because they're built-in effects of the Unreal Engine and because "ooooh pretty". But it really just looked odd and too "modern" versus the softer TOS aesthetic.

I've heard that lens flare was avoided by cinematographers because it was considered shoddy workmanship. That changed in the 1970s when the whole syntax of film was radically reformed.
On the commentary for the 1999 Thomas Crown Affair there is a story about when the director got into an argument about flares. OTOH, there are flares in Star Trek: The Motion Picture! Aieeeee!

Donny, those look terrific. That first shot looks kind of like Star Trek V. Proving that some of those "out of date" designs would hold up JUST fine.

I admit those shots are very much outside of the TOS aesthetic (doesn't look like a studio set!), but they were just for fun anyway. However, I will be crafting a couple "TOS Planet Sets" down the line, complete with fake-looking rocks and plants.

Started with the food service props tonight, beginning with re-doing my previous version of the coffee cups. I did some additional research and, lo-and-behold, came across this thread at The Fleet Workshop: http://discuss.fleetworkshop.org/t/star-trek-tos-gray-coffee-cup/1307

The research (again with some great work by the late-great Greg Schnitzer, among others) reveals that the cups were in fact styrofoam, made by a now-defunct company called Styrocup. I, of course, could not help myself, and added the Styrocup label to the bottom of the cup (It's canon!). Of course, in the future, they can break Styrofoam down with the material reprocessors, or we can assume that it's a biodegradable Styrofoam or some other 23rd century magic, as I don't want to condone Starfleet using such a product so eco-unfriendly.

I also built in 3 levels of liquid in the cup which is determined by choice while placing the cup in the game world. And yes, I modeled the bubbles in the coffee myself and made a texture from that model ;)

Looks like there were two different bottoms, it seems. Great job on the coffee inside! Although, I like a lot of cream and sugar. Will there be steam coming off them in the game? :)

I was going to mention this to you. I am determined to find some of those damn Styrocups, 3D scan them, and print out a prototype from a bonded ceramic or lathe it from metal.

The thing is, I’m sure those cups were not meant to represent styrofoam. They were meant to represent some 23rd century material that would keep coffee in an open cup perfectly hot for three weeks. Maybe... Starfoam. :P

I’d actually considered calling it Star-o-foam or something similar. :D

And here's my tribute to the late Grace Lee Whitney, who was unfortunately cut from the show mid-way through Season One. I gained a new respect to Ms. Whitney when I discovered that she fell into alcoholism after her role on Trek and eventually recovered (with the help of fellow recovering alcoholic Leonard Nimoy). Because I too am a recovering alcoholic, I made a point to approach Grace at the first convention I went to in 2014 while she was signing and selling her book "The Longest Trek: My Tour of the Galaxy". I wanted to say so much more, but I sort of chickened out and all I managed to get out was a "Hey, Grace!" as she was touching up her lipstick at her booth. Without looking at me, she said hey back, and went about her business, and so did I. Shortly after that convention she passed away. Here's to you, Grace, and thank you for being an advocate of recovery from alcoholism.

Thanks to @feek61 for sending me his perspective-corrected images of the Janice Rand cards.
