This is CBS, home of the comfort food episodic procedural. Look what they did to MacGyver. The origins of this Magnum remake probably didn't include someone asking, "How can we take a show that fell short of its potential and make it better?" They probably chose the property with name recognition they could remake and then afterward tried to figure out what to do with it.

Quite liked the look of that.

I thought the 5-0 remake was a poor idea and I've enjoyed that. This looks as if it is set in the same universe.

Why the heck are we seeing him in space? That's the most puzzling thing to me about the trailer, seeing as that wasn't an element of the original. Thought I was watching the wrong trailer for a few seconds until I heard the name and with the scene changing. What an odd way to begin a trailer.

Well....................that guy has all the charm and charisma of a ham sandwich.

To put things in perspective: TNG season 1 has infinitely more charm and charisma...

I've had ham sandwiches more tasty than that remake promo video.

That includes two of my exes as well.

I'll watch the original. Sadly, the video clip proves that if they have to remake/reboot a show, they're leeching off the title instead of making their own name. The latest cinematography effects alone don't make a show. Never have, never will. Show a kid who's never seen anything made with modern effects some old show from the 1950s or 1960s and they'll be floored if the content is good. (Show something newer first then show something older and they'll either laugh at how the older stuff looks or give the content a chance as opposed to making judgments over the f/x.)

Same here. It's an interesting shift.

My first inclination over the space nonsense was "give us a break". Then they switch to where he lives with his knucklehead friends. What's bad is that the space nonsense was far better than the robot doing the monologue about his knuckleheads.

Insta-pass. Is anything being lamely green-lighted these days? Whatever happened to new shows and franchises being based on or influenced by older stuff or genres with transferable aspects? Nowadays, George Lucas wouldn't have been able to make Star Wars because "Star Wars" wouldn't be a known name. Maybe he'd get to reboot "Flash Gordon", maybe a few of Akira Kurosawa's movies if the same title (and known fame by the generic public were remembered), but definitely nothing "new" (or even "inspired by"). If remaking something, how far would one be able to take other franchises' properties anyway? And would adding laser swords in place of samurai swords and Vader's PG13 helmet have as much "ooh and aah" factor in 2018 that they had in 1977?

Are we maybe supposed to believe that he's gone through astronaut training? When it switches to him saying his name, all it does is make me facepalm and think "No, you're bloody not Thomas Sullivan Magnum!" The entire thing just feels like a bizarro universe where they match some of the 80's elements like the way the helicopter is colored for instance, and the car, but where everything else about it just feels off and wrong. And the destruction of the cars is just sad.

He's not really doing a Halo dive. They literally say it in the trailer. It's from the book by Robin Masters they are reading, and teasing Magnum about. In this version, Masters has based some of his books on Magnum's adventures... and heightened them for effect.

And, it's a solid bet: if the show is successful, they are gonna try and get Selleck to show up as Masters.

If there’s any justice in this world. Unless the negotiations break down and they ended up having Roger E. Mosley and Larry Manetti follow a made-up back story via a dream sequence or something.

That’d be a valentine for the fans.

Does anyone know if this offically puts and end to the sequel that was in the works at one point see as how that was an abc production rather than a cbs?

Well, I for one would much rather be watching a sequel, even if it's just in the form of a TV movie, but I'd think it would overshadow the cbs production which they wouldn't want, so I'm thinking it likely was canned and an agreement with the IP holders to go ahead with the reboot was put in place instead.
