So marriage is the perfect way to commit crime?. If you do something wrong and neither person can be forced to rat the other out? Everyone's wife or husband is basically on par with them being your lawyer or shrink. Jason
Kind of. Spouse is actually better than lawyer or doctor, I believe. The basic explanation is that in the eyes of the law, a married couple is a single entity for purposes of the fifth amendment's protection against self-incrimination. So while, normally, you can decline to testify on the grounds that you may incriminate yourself (either in this, or some other, unrelated matter), if you're married you can also decline to testify to something that may incriminate your spouse, even if you yourself aren't culpable. However, according to this website I just googled to refresh what I vaguely remember from my Freshman "Intro to American National Government" class ten years ago, there are (now) exceptions to asserting that privilege, such as when one spouse is accused of a crime against the other and, relevantly, when changed with stuff like human trafficking (probably because of cases exactly like this one; it wouldn't do for someone who was dealing in modern slavery to be protected if they force the victim to marry them). I should probably re-listen to the podcast commentaries for the beginning of BSG's fourth season. I don't remember RDM mentioning anything about killing Cally off so her actress could pursue other opportunities with her weird sex-cult, but, you know, maybe I can read between the lines.
Hollywood Reporter has probably the most in-depth article about the whole Allison Mack story to date.
This whole thing is insane. There’s obvious slavery, trafficking and rape going on. (And that “marriage” is obviously a sham.) Can’t the authorities DO something about this shit?
If sex trafficking is illegal, and she's done it, it's a pretty big issue. Are "sex cults" in of themselves illegal if it's just a group of people banging one another with fully-aware consent of all involved? Isn't that any different to polyamory or orgies? Those are not illegal, the last I had checked. Whether people actually want them and the risks involved becomes a large debate in of itself. So what's the difference with a sex cult? Bringing in people against their will or brainwashing/conditioning them, perhaps?
I think it does come down to the brainwashing and not letting people leave if they want to that makes something a cult and not just some kind of sex club or orgy. I mean in the 70's didn't they use to have things called key parties? Also didn't hippies have communes in the 60's? The question I always wonder is how does one prove someone has been brainwashed? I've heard some say Patty Hearst wasn't brainwashed back in the day and actually went along with the others because she wanted to be a radical. That Stockholm's syndrome isn't really a thing. Does brainwashing mean someone no longer has free will? Also how does it work on such a scale like in this case. You would think that what is going on is so wrong that it would be clear that you should get out of their and call the police but many people just went along with it. I have another question. DId Mack start off as a victim? At what point did she become a innocent actress trying to find something to help her with her issues to being a monster? In that article they said she didn't join until season 5 of "Smallville." Does that mean she was a good person on the inside before that time period or was she always bad and this place pulled it out of her and let her express it. Can someone be both a victim and monster at the same time? They say most abusers were once abused when they were young as well. Mack can also go under the category of another child actor who was messed up by the system. Which puts her on a very long list. Jason
Update on this story. Allison Mack pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy charges including extortion and forced labor. Each count she pleaded guilty to carries a maximum of 20 years.
Wow. If I ever see anything from Smallville again it will feel weird seeing her. Allmost but not quite like seeing OJ Simpson in the Naked Gun movies.
I agree but as time as moved on I have learned to adjust. You learn to kind of block it out. Though it's never quite the same as before. I even have this with actors who died unless it like from the old black and white era or then younger actors in the 80's who are now dead. The first big celebrity death for me was John Candy and the first big criminal celebrity thing I think was O.J Simpson or maybe Mike Tyson when he went to prison. Jason
All I know is I wish O.J. was cast as the terminator because then we might have actually ended after 2.
