Things you wished were mention in Trek novels

How bout this (something I thought of on another thread). Can someone explain why the navigation deflector in TMP (and TWOK) is tan in some scenes and blue in others? Next time someone does a movie era book, answer me that (I don't recall it ever being mentioned in any other books).

I know, deep stuff. But fans want to know (well, at least 1 fan anyway).

Most of the time, at least onscreen in the early films, we see the "tan" navigational-deflector whenever the ship appears to be in "standby"-mode (i.e., before the deflector gets "warmed up") -- for instance, in ST:TMP, we don't see the deflector turn blue until after the Enterprise has departed from the dockyards and is accelerating, but then in later movies, we see shots like the Enterprise-A in Spacedock seemingly at a standstill, but with the "blue" deflector already primed. It's inconsistent, and likely done for purely visual reasons, but I'm assuming that there's at least some in-universe technical reason behind it, too.

The Directors Edition of TMP made the "tan = low power" deflector make more sense by fixing it switching colors back and forth after the ship was pulled into V'Ger. It's a shame the later movies didn't keep up with it. I like the way the movies (well, the TOS and Kelvin movies) had the ship change state. The nacelles only glowing at warp speed, the deflector and nacelle fins opening on the JJ-Prise, the Bird of Prey's wings and the K'tinga's torpedo launcher, and so on. It made the ships seem less "static."

Sulu has deflector dish RGB sliders on his helm console.

I want to see Africa, and actually see London.
They are referred to as characters family home, much like the vineyards and winery for Picard, but we never see them...just hear about London second hand from Troi, and I do t think Geordi has ever been home.
I guess I would t mind Alaska for Riker...but it’s not on my want list. Maybe some of the ‘alien’ crew having to explore Egypt the way our crews have explored ‘alien’ worlds. I know it’s a bit inward looking for strange new worlds, but I think the contrast would be nice. We got about ten minutes of London getting bombed in ID, but seeing what is probably to most multicultural city on earth in a future with the federation would be interesting. Is Kensington and Chelsea still full of Malcolm Reed types? Did the Borg assimilate Croydon and nobody noticed? Is there now a Vulcan quarter in the East End? How do Vulcans handle chilli sauce? And can we see Troi take Tuvok for a kebab on Green Lanes?
Stuff like that.

I think one of the TNG Relaunch books has a scene with Geordi visiting one of his relatives in Africa.

Some parts of the novel Hollow Men take place in London, as I recall.

London ("a big city") was mentioned in the 12/30/14 Trek DS9 novel The Missing by Una McCormack, which was visited by a Starflleet Intelligence agent and a young Tzenkethi woman he was looking after, though was thought by her to be "dull and rather dirty" and containing "discord, bustle, variety, and laughter", but where apparently is still theater performed to see, as he took her there to see a play.

We see London onscreen in Star Trek Into Darkness, at the very beginning of the film, when "John Harrison" blackmails Thomas Harewood, etc. In the Litverse, London is mentioned as having gotten destroyed during World War III (per The Lost Era: The Sundered), but presumably later rebuilt.

The facility Harewood blew up was in London too. Admiral Marcus had lived and worked there for decades, explaining why Carol had an English accent in this timeline, although I think that line was cut from the movie.

In the Litverse, London is mentioned as having gotten destroyed during World War III (per The Lost Era: The Sundered), but presumably later rebuilt.

I believe The Sundered established that most of the nuclear strikes were aerial blasts causing devastating EMPs, rather than direct impacts causing mass destruction and centuries' worth of contamination. Thus explaining why it was feasible for those cities to have been rebuilt.

^ From what I can tell, the novel seems to suggest in its phrasing that London was destroyed by a direct nuclear airburst (though there's more later about the EMPs), and the stories "The Immortality Blues" and "Mestral" from Strange New Worlds 9 also both went with this interpretation (the former story showing Lower Manhattan getting vaporized by a warhead):
After the first nuclear bombs had exploded over London and New York, Tel Aviv and Riyadh, Karachi and New Delhi, nearly half a billion people had died. The postatomic horror that followed the blasts made the Bell Riots of 2024 look like a Boy Scout jamboree.

I think one of the TNG Relaunch books has a scene with Geordi visiting one of his relatives in Africa.
With Geordi I think it was established on the show that ships and star bases are what he considers “home”, as his parents were in Starfleet and moved around a lot, and in some cases they were each assigned to different ships/bases.

But going back to TMP, the original theatrical version was never color timed, so we never saw the correct colours until the Director’s Edition, and its to bad that Paramount didn’t use the DE version of the theatrical cut for the Blu-Ray or HD versions as that’s the only part of the DE that was done at film resolution. So, when you look at the DE, the deflector and nacelles glow purplish-blue.

...actually see London.

And can we see Troi take Tuvok for a kebab on Green Lanes?

Ha! I wrote a scene where Deanna has taken her daughter Natasha on a visit to London in The Poisoned Chalice, partly to show her where her granddad was from and also as an excuse for me to put in a few refs to my hometown.

Holland Park, Westminster Bridge, the Tower of London, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Hyde Park all get a mention, and the overall sense is that the city is still pretty much unchanged in the 2380's. I regret I wasn't able to work in Hackney or Tottenham Hotspur, though (Marina Sirtis's birthplace and favorite football team)...

Lwaxana's role as grandmother for Natasha is next to none-existent. There are subspace communications and so on. You might think Lwaxane would be giddy with excitement. Has Deanna already visited her mom with little Tasha?
As much as I like action scenes, such family moments are a nice respite here and there.
