Voyager fans.. are you disappointed about Discovery?

Ouch! Lol let me guess. Not a fan.
Of Discovery? No, I've personally enjoyed it thus far. It has its ups and downs, and certainly Burnham has gotten the lion's share of character development. But, I also have found the other characters, like Tilly, Stamets, and Saru, engaging enough to keep me in the show.

Certainly with Pike making an appearance I'm on board for Season 2 :)

I have my fingers crossed about Pike. I just hope he doesn't add another hat to Burnham's already huge collection.

Ok I've watched the entire first season of Discovery so spoilers are below.

On the positive side the stories are darker, the risks greater and its serialized which I'm ok with. It's different. It also has really good actors for the most part.

However, on the negative, I feel absolutely nothing for the crew. There is little to no chemistry between the cast or characters except Tyler.

Spoiler Alert:
Far worse though is that there is little character development except for the lead and she gets everything. Take every interesting character even produced on Star Trek and it's her. She is searching for her humanity (Data, Seven, the doctor, Odo); struggling with her emotions (Spock); her parents were killed by enemy Klingons (Kira); raised by another race as a child (7, Kira); betrayed by her mentor Sarek (Data and Dr. Sung); defied her captain to protect the crew(Chakotay); stands up to Starfleet on moral grounds (Maquis); is a great scientist and engineer (Spock, Geordie, B'elanna, Scotty, Janeway, too many to mention); was betrayed by her lover who was actually a spy (Chakotay and Seska); amazing negotiator (Picard and the other captains); wanted by both sides in the mirror universe (Seven with the Borg and Janeway)....ok I'm tired...the list just goes on and on. It's too much imo.The rest of the crew get barely a nod. The first gay romance on board lasted a few episodes and then one is killed. No lead up, just there one minute, gone the next. Its daunting.

It's like lumping 7, Janeway and the doc into one and everyone else sits pushing buttons. She is literally everywhere.

I'll try season 2 but if Next Gen is any indication, I may only make it half way. Then I'll pop in again 10 years from now and try again

I'm finished with everything NuTrek.

I'm tired of the continuing efforts to re-do TOS. I'm tired of those characters who are getting weaker and weaker for each and every series and movies they come up with these days. I'm tired of seeing actors who keeps getting worse and worse for each year (did they stop producing good actors after 2001?). I'm tired of watered-down stories which keeps getting worse and worse too and I'm definitely tired of megalomaniac producers who are desperate to put their mark on the product by screwing up established Trek history. These recent "Klingon" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was the final straw for me.

I have TNG, DS9, the first three seasons of Voyager plus a stack of TOS VHS-tapes and I'm planning to buy TOS on DVD too.

That's enough for me.

If I add Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis to the DVD collection, I have all I need for the rest of my life or at least until someone is capable of coming up with a good SF-series again.

Netflix has a Lost in Space reboot. I'm going to try it.

Love your comment about actors. Sure they can act but where is the chemistry? Also agree about TOS and Voyager. I enjoy revisiting these series. I'm struggling with Discovery. I will see what happens with Pike. I may not last long if they mess it up.

Hmmmm........ I still have nightmares about the latest "Lost In Space" movie.
Not to mention "Stargate Universe," :barf2:

A new "Lost In Space" made after 2007 with actors of today and the current whims of the producers with political correctness and all that's possible nowadays.

The signs are not good, bound for a disaster as I see it.

Maybe we will find ourselves on the voyage of the damned!

The beginning of the 'darkness' in my mind, where every new version of something needed to be dark, colourless, and require squinting to make out edge.

I post on the Discovery forum but it's nice to have an option to write a summing up of the show here. Filtered through the eyes of someone with preferences to the storytelling and direction that was Voyager.

Some of the technology in Discovery is wrong. Yep going for the 'wrong' word. Much of why I personally liked Voyager and wanted post Voyager Star Trek was because of temporal technology. Time travel was teased to us and used in Voyager (as we all know). 29th Century technology - time ship Aeon and the USS Relativity 'Future's End' and 'Relativity' fit for an even later timeline. I'm just getting into watching "Enterprise" so it's going to be with interest placing references to the Temporal Cold War of the future. Discovery and its spore drive technology (shades of 'Equinox) uses universe and universes jumping technology. It is simply misplaced and bizarre. I really felt it was inappropriate for the timeline. By all means have a future vessel share advanced technology but to have in 'Discovery' an advancement that is beyond other versions of Trek was kind of a big stretch.

Character development was purely plot driven, with the exception of Michael. Lorca's character was retooled to just move the story literally to another universe. Any notion he was a damaged Starfleet Officer going rogue was quashed when he turned into a cartoon character. Stamet's and his partner were introduced and pulled apart so quickly with Stamet's himself hardly given time to show any real loss. That was the strangest writing, he just pulled his socks up and went about his daily tasks. Oh man and the Ash/Voq arc - seriously. Him and L'Rell devise some nonsensical plan that had no direction, required luck, and obscene bone crushing, skin flaying surgery. Why??

It all came to a rather confused ending. Certainly no message proclaiming a values system. Our lead, a mutineer was let off the hook. She left a dead Captain in her wake (Georgiou) when she was charged and left another one (Lorca) in different universe. Only to bring back yet another 'Captain' to be the catalyst to end a war by threat. So uplifting ;)

Discovery disappointed me the most with its building up of expectation and then total lack of consequence. Yet it is Star Trek - just. The writing is disjointed. Hopefully season two without the spore drive gimmick and need to justify boring Michael might offer some actual adventure. Gosh even some discovery. I would rate what I've seen so far as a 4/10.

I just have to comment on this. When I started watching Discovery I told myself I would not get too upset about a few twists when it came to canon but this...this stupid plot point...have these writers even watched Voyager?! I seriously doubt it!

They are basically telling us that they had this spore drive that could traverse galaxies and no one bothered to pull it out of mothballs to get Voyager home. Seriously! How stupid do they think we are?!

Don't answer that. The spore drive says it all!

It really doesn't, any more than all the other advances in warp drive we've seen before.

That's the problem with a prequel. If this spore drive is such a big deal why had no other ship had it since or even mentioned it?

I feel like they could have set discovery after Voyager and then everything in it makes sense. (Except Sarak)

That might have worked, but I doubt it.

Also, it's only in its first season. Shouldn't we at least give the series another season to explore the spore drive before condemning it for the spore drive? I mean, TNG went Warp 10 with no issue, then Warp 10 was an issue.

I'm not really condemning it. The spore drive is an interesting concept, especially with the human interface. It's just one issue with a prequel. Just like introducing new alien races.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they mothball the spore drive at the end?

The Lost in Space movie to me is one of those movies that is so bad it's enjoyable. Not a great movie but fun. Just because that movie was not great has nothing to do with the new show. I can't wait to see it, I'll definatly give it a fair try. Actually one of the main reasons I'm looking forward to it is because my boyfriend's (hopefully soon fiance) father is a sci fi nerd and it's something we can watch together.

Until a non-human pilot could be found. Something tells me that wouldn't stop the lady who rewrote the timeline to get her crew home a few years earlier.

They don't want to use it until they could find a non human interface. The spore drive is a big deal to starfleet and I would imagine they are putting a lot of research and effort into this.

Why can't we have both?
Discovery now, post-Voy show later on? There will be Trek forever. Eventually they'll get back to the future.

That's another thing that really annoys me, the constant "doom and gloom" scenario in all SF movies and series. Therefore I can live without them.

The day NCIS is cancelled, then I will stop watching TV series. I might keep the sports channels for the sake of ice hockey but nothing else.
