Alright, who's working on what?

Can anyone say anything about what they've written or writing or whatever if only in what form it is taking and so forth. I just feel like the writers are all very busy writing, but I feel like I don't have a clue what's up their sleeves now or in some distant future or past? Mm?

As far as Trek novels go, we are currently in an interregnum. The novel license has expired and is in the process of being renewed. No one is writing anything.* Nearly everything that's set to come out has come out. When there's an announcement are more Trek novels in the pipeline, this forum will start blowing up immediately with posts and threads, so don't worry that you'll miss it.

*Okay, Kirsten Beyer is probably writing something, since the next Voyager novel, "To Lose the Earth," has been on the "forthcoming" list for a while, suggesting it was commissioned before the license expired. But that's probably the only Trek novel that can be meaningfully said to be in-progress at the moment.

Maybe I should have posted in the fan fiction, but I was just wondering what people had in mind if they can say, tease, original or not in any medium or format.
Or just the general direction any writers, pros or non pros, are or want to go in.

“To Lose The Earth” is in the works.

Plus the English translations of “The Root Of All Rage” is set to be released next month, while “In The Heart Of Chaos” will be released in November (both books were released in German in 2016). And I think that’s it for 2018.

I'm revising an original novelette I plan to submit to a magazine soon, and considering writing a short story for an anthology that's open this month, though I'm not sure I can come up with something that quickly. Those projects have required me to postpone another original story I've been planning to get started on. I've also been giving some thought to coming up with an outline for a new spec novel, a concept I've been stalled on for a while now but that may finally be showing some progress. Generally, though, I'm kind of between projects at the moment.

As far as stuff I already wrote, this month's Analog Science Fiction and Fact will feature my new SF comedy story "Hubpoint of No Return," the fourth story in my Hub series. Hub Space: Tales from the Greater Galaxy, the e-book collection reprinting and expanding the first three Hub stories, has recently become available in trade paperback as well. And my collection Among the Wild Cybers, reprinting nearly all the rest of my published original short fiction and featuring the brand-new story "Aspiring to Be Angels" (a prequel to my novel Only Superhuman), should be out later this year.

The Librarians and Planet of the Apes have been keeping me busy on the writing front. The second LIbrarians novel came out in mass-market last week and the next one is due out in the fall. I have some other irons in the fire as well, but nothing I can talk about right now.

I've also been working on various editorial projects for Tor Books. THE NIGHT DAHLIA, a hard-boiled occult thriller by R.S. Belcher, comes out later this week, btw.

I'm asuming, btw, that if anyone was actually working on a Star Trek novel right that wasn't already mentioned by Pockets, you could even talk about it, right?

We could talk about anything whose outline had been approved by CBS. But there's simply nothing happening yet.

But that reminds me, the first couple of Star Trek Adventures role-playing game campaigns I wrote for Modiphius have been approved, though I can't talk about specifics yet.

Depends. Not speaking directly about Pocket, but many publishers and licensors like to control the advance publicity--and prefer that the author not say anything until the project is "officially" announced.

Honestly, I'm working on a tie-in novel right now, but I'm not at liberty to divulge it yet. Once the publisher announces the book, then, trust me, I won't shut up about it. :)

Christopher, you write solely science fiction or sci-fi (what's the difference? and is it hard?) with your originals only, right? Only Superhuman is classified how? You know you would make a good writer for The Orville. Have you tried?
How about you, Greg. Are you a sci-fi guy exclusively?

At the risk of putting words in Christopher's mouth, I think of ONLY SUPERHUMAN as "Hard-SF superhero fiction." It's a really fun book, btw. You should check it out.

As for me, I'm far from being a sci-fi guy exclusively. I've also written fantasy, horror, murder mysteries, spy thrillers, children's books, and even at least one historical romance. No westerns yet, but that's probably only a matter of time.

I pretty much think of myself as a modern-day pulp writer. Have keyboard will travel. :)

(Says the guy who made one of his first professional sales to MIKE SHAYNE MYSTERY MAGAZINE, way back in the day.)

Yeah, hard science fiction is my preferred area. I've written a couple of fantasy stories now and then, but never sold any yet.

As for the difference, "sci-fi" is basically just a nickname for science fiction, an alternative to "SF." (It was coined by noted fanzine publisher Forrest J. Ackerman by analogy with "hi-fi" as a nickname for high-fidelity audio.) It used to be that SF purists (including me) found "sci-fi" an insulting term, because it had come to be associated with the fanciful schlock that passed for science fiction in the mass media, and which often overlapped with fantasy, horror, and the like. These days, that distinction seems to have faded, perhaps because there's more legitimate science fiction in mass media, or perhaps because, now that SF has gained mainstream acceptability, SF fans no longer need to feel as defensive.

Only Superhuman is classified how?

What Greg said. It's hard-SF superhero space opera. Last year at Shore Leave, Glenn Haumann came up with a good (if somewhat belated) elevator pitch for it, "Superheroes meet The Expanse."

I decided a couple of decades ago that I wasn't interested in becoming a TV writer. It's not really a field for freelancers anymore; it means committing full-time to being a member of a show's writing staff, and that's too much work for me.

Is that just a reference to the War for the Planet of the Apes novelization and Tales from the Forbidden Zone, or do you have other Apes stuff in the works?
I don't think anything has been officially announced, but @Dayton Ward has hinted a few times that he's working on another Trek related book for Insight Editions.

Just those two. Thanks for asking.

Cool, I still need to check those two out, so at least now I know I don't need to add anything else to my wishlist.
