MLB World Series 2018: Eh. Dodgers/Boston. Eh.

I still think Ohtani will end up as a huge disappointment.

It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out. A lot of people think he'll wind up either as a full-time pitcher or a full-time DH because the day-to-day demands of MLB are significantly more rigorous than NPB, and that's certainly within the realm of possibility. After all, for every Darvish or Nomo there's an Igawa or Fujikawa; for every Ichiro there's a Fukudome. Because NPB is essentially AAAA baseball, it makes projections and comparison profiles very difficult, and Ohtani's two-way nature (at least for now; he's DHing today and pitching on Sunday) makes things even more difficult to model.

But, hey, if he does flame out, the Dodgers are only on the hook for the league-minimum salary because the CBA is worthless.

Says the guy who sneered at buying an antenna to watch the World Series.

Edit: Cubs win the home opener, including a home run from Ian Happ on the first pitch of the season, but if anyone was wondering whether Lester just had an off year last season or had entered his decline phase ... I think that question was answered today.

You probably know this but it was not the home opener. They were in Miami.

...and that's why I didn't bother redrafting him on my fantasy team.

But I sure am happy I have Rizzo now. :D
Small sample size... always remember early season returns are dependent on a small sample size.

Now I'm off to trade Trea Turner for Ian Happ.
I need POWER!!!

Looks like Chris Sale is done for the day after one hit and nine Ks through six innings. Welcome back, baseball.

Giants won a game that Kershaw was pitching. After a crappy week for the team, that shoikd give them confidence.

Union: We need to do something about teams not signing anyone!
Owners: How about 50 new jobs and a cut of the multi billion expansion fees?
Union: Sounds good.

That was actually my first reaction, that Manfred isn't serious about expansion, he just wants to dangle that out there as a fig leaf to the union so he can then yank it off the table. (Also, the union doesn't get any of the expansion fee; it goes straight to the other owners.)

Specifically calling out San Antonio and Montreal as expansion possibilities is what really makes me think he isn't serious. Montreal is not a realistic option unless there's an angel investor waiting to drop a half-billion dollars for franchise rights and team costs and someone else ready to drop $700 million on a new stadium in a city that was drawing 10,000 fans per game; the Rangers and Astros jointly hold the territorial rights for the entire state of Texas (as well as the entirety of Louisiana and a chunk of New Mexico), meaning MLB would need the explicit approval of both teams for an expansion franchise to be located there--and given that Globe Life Field is opening in two years and Jim Crane is finally making money from the Astros, good luck on getting either of them to sign off on something that would substantially decrease their market share.
