MLB 17-18 Offseason: The Giants are preparing for EYBS' return

Maybe they should play seven inning games and no extra innings. Just have them end in a tie like in hockey.

Not that I'd want to actually see any of that. Although, with the emphasis on starting pitchers throwing less innings and having strong bullpens to take over for them, you'd think fewer innings would be a good thing for pitcher's arms.

Last year would have had the Yankees win the division instead of the wild card and the Brewers get in as the second NL WC instead of the Rockies, so I think we can definitively say that adding draws is stupid.

Anything that prevents the Yankees from winning the division is definitely a good thing. ;)

Not a good example if you want to defend baseball. That 11 minutes number is probably true, as it's just counting from snap of the ball until the whistle and adding those up.

How long do you think a baseball game takes if you only count from the second the pitcher releases the ball until each play is dead (out/strike/player safe at a base/etc.) ? Each play is seconds at best, many MUCH shorter. Might be that it's similar to football in that there's 10-15 minutes of action, but I'm guessing the number actually comes in a lot shorter than 15 minutes.

You need 54 outs, 51 if the home team wins. Between the two teams, what, 250-300 pitches? Internet says it takes 0.4 seconds to get to home plate (call it 1/2 second). So 2.5 minutes for every pitch in the game (balls, strikes, foul balls). 1-3 seconds for each out, with ground outs probably longer than fly outs, but decent average. Add another minute. Say 15 hits in the game, 10 seconds per hit until end of play? 2.5 minutes more. We're only at 6 minutes so far, and that's a decently-active offensive game. Gotta get to double this to tie the NFL game, and baseball takes the same 3 hours or so on average. My numbers can be pretty off and we're still in the range.

Baseball is almost ALL standing around waiting for something to happen. And even then, it's a pretty individual sport, so there's 9 guys hanging out and only 2-3 might actually do anything that play, or inning even. it's all waiting around, staring down the batter, adjusting gloves and helmets, etc.

At least football has the clock which gives the illusion of urgency, and makes it look like something is happening while they huddle up and chat about the next 2 second play. It's a mental thing, but at least it looks like things are still moving.

Being iced in today, with idle time, I actually found the study of actual play-time in professional sports games.

-- NFL: A study of 2010 games came up with an average of 11 minutes of action. Other studies show the range over the seasons to be from 12 to 17 minutes.
-- MLB: A study of 2013 games came up with an average of just under 18 minutes of action. Significantly, another study found there are five times as many ads in baseball games now compared to fifty years ago.

As far as the average of action as a percentage of the time it takes to play the entire game goes, for the NFL it was 11 minutes in 3 hours and 10 minutes, or 5.79 percent action. For MLB, it was 17 minutes 58 seconds of action in 2 hours and 56 minutes, or 10.21 percent action. The average amount of game time taken up by commercials was 42 minutes in MLB and 75 minutes in the NFL. If you go to the link I give below, as the report shows, soccer, hockey, and basketball (in that order) provide by far the most action per minute it takes to play the entire game.

In the NFL, I would say it's the perception of action and the excitement it generates because of the frantic and sometimes violent nature of it when it occurs that makes one think more is going on per minute than in an MLB game. So yeah, it probably is valid to say that what one defines as "action" may be more important than the actual amount of it in the sport for the individual enjoyment of what's going on.

Here's the link to the site where I got the information:

After the Rockets win the NBA finals, the Astros will win another world series this year. The Texans, no matter how good Watson is, will still be worthless to mediocre at best. Two out of three ain't bad though.

Hole in one!

Edit: Also, Jon Heyman said yesterday that the rumored Cubs offer of 4 / 110 to Arrieta never happened.

Kind of ruins the "Scott Boras fucked him over by being a bad agent" narrative and proves once again that "LOL greedy player turned down huge contract" rumors are usually bullshit.

I was just about to post about that. Damn, that really sucks.

Satan has come to collect his due for that deal the Giants made for EYBS.

Edit: In other news, MLB's bullshit treatment of MiLB players, regarding pay, is now codified in federal labor law.

Stay classy, Oakland. Linky

The A's would have been in San Jose several years ago if it weren't for the Giants' fuckery, and the Giants wouldn't even be in San Francisco if it weren't for the A's generosity, so ... I find it hard to snark at Oakland for this.
