The intro for DSC if it were done in '90s style

Two other thoughts. Ones I had during the actual '90s.

In 1995, I remember being totally blown away by the Voyager intro. It put all the previous Star Trek intros to shame. That fall DS9 upgraded its intro, in part because of the changing nature of the show but I think also to keep with VOY's intro.

In 1997, I half-expected them to change the intro again for DS9's sixth season to reflect the war setting. Watching the Discovery in battle is along the lines of what I imagined the DS9 intro might've looked like if they actually did change it again.

An interesting thought. DS9 started its Dominion War after the Cold War was over and during the "peaceful '90s" before 9/11. Now, our second war-centric show occurs when the American-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have (very arguably) drawn down and at least been declared over.

I'm probably overthinking it, but there seems to be a small correlation.

Maybe a little bit...

Like Mark Twain said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme." Now I'll get off the slippery slope this could lead to...

I like this in a nostalgic fashion, but it is absolutely wrong for the show Discovery is. I actually really like the opening credit sequence on the show proper, as it (like the show) feels a lot like the sequel to Enterprise (as opposed to the prequel of Star Trek).

Getting rid of the silly twirly-spin that the ship does before sporing away somewhere and a minor textual suggested change, that of "Based loosely on 'Star Trek' by Gene Roddenberry" might be the only other change to make... but that verbiage change was meant more as levity and I think they're on the right track, based on the latest clip I'd seen (not the fan-made clip where they see the Enterprise and Enterprise blows Discovery up...)

I came across this on YouTube. You might get a kick out of it, wish this is how it should've been, or think it sucks. Take your pick. ;)

I got a kick out of it.

holy shin, that was 90s.....
I'm so glad we got what we got and not that. Never go 100% Voyager to paraphrase RDJ in Tropic Thunder

Just liking the synth piano keyboard in the introduction a lot. The video is standard Star Trek with a side of cool new interpretation. So far so good it appears, good stuff with Discovery.

I thought that was pretty well done for fan-made. I enjoyed it.
I think it would be interesting to see what could have come if the creator had more official sources to work with?

The visuals were outstanding and the editing between shots were seamless, though it dragged on a bit long at the end and was a little too dependent on flippy/spinny and "pew! pew!" stuff for my taste (the intro should be more slow and dignified). The music is well done, but a little too synthesizer-y for a Trek intro, and felt more 80s than 90s. There was so much synthesizer it could have been a Yazoo song (not that that's a bad thing, mind you). A 90s Trek intro would be more orchestral. Or maybe I was just looking for an excuse to post some Yazoo/Alison Moyet videos. All in all, though, very well-produced for a fan edit.

That being said, I like the uniqueness of the DSC intro (when compared to other Treks), and the music, so I'm glad they didn't try and make it in a more traditional style. The other show intros were great, but I wouldn't want them to do the same thing again. I appreciate the da Vinci-like sketches and exploded technical drawings transitioning into the fully realized tech intermixed with Klingon artifacts and the spores and planets. It's an interesting mix of old and new, traditional and advanced, and captures the theme of "Discovery" and exploration and technical growth quite well.

Looks like the intro was done by Dennis A Nicholson five years ago as something he'd have for a Star Trek series. And it's the same guy who put together the music video.

So, I think he was using the resources he had available to him at the time for what he thought the next Star Trek intro could sound like as opposed to one done back in 1995. If we're going to pretend this was an intro done back then, I'd pretend they couldn't get Jerry Goldsmith to do another intro and found someone else.

But I love that not only is he an editor but he's also a musician. I envy that. I'm an editor myself but I'm not a musician. I was in chorus and I can dance, but I can't play any instruments. I thought about joining band when I was in school but then my parents said, "You don't play instruments" (words of encouragement right there!) and that was the end of that. I'd do piano or organ, though, if I played anything.

Interesting way of putting it. I'm agnostic about the opening credits myself. FWIW, though, the more DSC feels like a sequel to ENT rather than a prequel to TOS, the less I like it.

If someone re-rendered the shots without the lens-flare and camera rattle, then it would be 90s. As is, it's just the music and the text graphics.

That's better.

:barf2:

Back in September, I invited some friends over to watch the premiere of Discovery and one of them, as soon as the intro came up, sarcastically started singing with "It's been a long road..." He stopped as soon as I gave him a glare, which was probably the exact reaction he was looking to get from me.

I didn't care that, with ENT, they wanted to use a "contemporary" song. And the visuals in the intro looked great. But "Faith of the Heart" -- of all songs -- is what they decided to use? Seriously?

I guess it could've been worse. At least it wasn't Michael Bolton or Billy Joel.
