Space Battleship Yamato 2202

The Earth battlecarrier Apollo Norm will be getting a 1/1000 scale model kit in March. It will be half the price of the Andromeda model kit because it will not have the lights and sounds package.

The Mecha Colle Andromeda came out. I now have seven at my place (not all of them are staying here). They have decals for the three ships of that class in service during the first chapter of Yamato 2202.

It is being suggested that there will been a ship for everything that we see in Yamato 2202 eventually. At least with the Mecha Colle stuff. The 1/1000 scale kits...it may or may not happen due to some of the ships being rather large. Dessler's new ship is at least as long as Dommel's flagship and wider.

I wonder if there are any plans for larger scale models like they used to have - 1/500 and 1/350. I'm not a big fan of the smaller 1/1000+ scales. My ageing eyes don't like building them.

I doubt it, since the 1/500 scale Yamato is about the same length as the 1/1000 scale Dommel's battleship, and Andromeda would be massive, much less the larger enemy battleships.

A 1/500 scale Andromeda would be nearly three feet long (88.8 cm long in this case). A 1/500 scale Dommel's battleship would be 146 cm long, or nearly five feet long.

I went to Japan last June and was hoping to find all sorts of cool Space Battleship Yamato items and didn't hardly find anything. I found a Cosmo Tiger in one model shop and a gaming guide in a book store and I did see Captain Avatar as part of a mural on the side of a bike shop in Tokyo, but other than those few things I didn't see anything else my whole trip and I did tons of shopping.

Well, I saw BBY2202 eps. 7-10 English subbed. Like most of it, but IMO these writers are starting to return to the outlandish plot stylings of original Yamato a bit too much in some spots (assuming the translations are correct - and I've no reason to doubt them):

- 2,500,000 (two million five-hundred thousand) Gatlantian ships to create a Planet Busting Cannon using the Gamilian artificial sun near the 11th planet :wtf:... Then the Wave Motion Gun not destroying said artificial sun but instead just causing a disruption that disable all enemy ships. I didn't mind Kodai being willing tom spare them if they left; BUT when it's found they're all disabled - and they theorize the Galantians CAN'T repair them (again this is just a supposition on their part) -- so Kodai and Co. just leave then there and warp away...again :wtf:. I mean hell, the artificial sun is still there; the ships are still there and what if Kodai and Sanada are wrong?

- Yuki going out in a space suit and taking off the suit helmet (I guess to make sure she dies so Kadai doesn't then have to make a choice she believes he won't be able to live with later? WTF? I mean doesn't she realize that the choice he would make is because he can't live without her - and her suicide would also be something he probably couldn't live with either - and that would screw up his ability to Command the mission further? (Hell - if she had a jet pack - which I thought these suits had anyway - she could have just 'jumped' directly to his fighter - and at least if she had kept the Helment on - the rescue maneuver Kodai did pull off would have been a bit less ridiculous. ;)

I do like:

- The Gamilas subplot that has (I assume) the survivors (and I assume the Gamilian Lt. Pilot now assisting Yamato for his own purposes was someone of Dessler's family line and would be next to assume Empire leadership); leading thbe earth Govt. to believe they all hated Dessler and his Facist Empire; when in fact the one's left behind parleying with Earth are attempting to restore the Gamilian Empire again as a facist dictatorship; and portraying the actual 'Rebels' who want to be rid of that government AS the followers of Dessler who want to restore it.

There is a lot going on here.

A whole lot.

I keep forgetting to check in here. :(
Haven't watched the first ten as a batch a few weeks ago, I'm enjoying the series even if a lot of the beats are basically from other science fiction things. I'm okay with them doing the Stealing the Enterprise sequence, for example.

I know that people seemed to think the show might be bad because of the staff changes, but it's working out to be pretty good so far. Just another year or so before it finishes. lol

With regard to them doing the "Stealing the Enterprise" sequence. You do realize it was a part of the original Comet Empire storyline (circa 1978-79) and that STIII:TSFS came out in 1984. <--- When I saw the Enterprise theft sequence in that film, I'm not kidding when I had the thought in the theater of: "Hey, looks like the story writer watched 'SBY: The Comet Empire' because this scene sure barrows a lot of the same structure and beats."

And two of the friends I was with (who also had seen SBY) thought the same thing coming out of the theater. :)

Haha, that's fair. I've never seen the sequel series so I don't really know the beats of this season.

Was the context of the Yamato scene also stealing the ship because the crew wanted to go on a rogue mission?

In the original Earth got what they think is a distress call. The Earth government chooses to ignore it as someone else's problem. Combined with this Earth spots the White Comet approaching Earth. They figure Andromeda by itself should be able to handle a comet. Mind you Earth had not encountered Comet Empire forces in any number outside maybe some fighters. Also Yamato is considered a relic to either be made as a museum or needing a massive refit to keep up with the new fleet.

Kodai suggests they go to someone's aid like Starsha gave Earth aid. Earth does not want to be a galactic peacekeeper.

So Kodai and his crew steal Yamato in order to do the right thing. If for no other reason, because they think Earth is in debt to the universe via Starsha.

Maybe you checked already when you were there but the big electronic stores usually have toy sections where you can find some good Yamato stuff.

^^^
Yep. the Earth base on the edge of the system was destroyed - and Kodai found evidence of alien attack and the possible source; and wanted to go investigate further but Command said: "No!" in no uncertain terms; so Kodai got the crew together and stole the thing. They had to hack the drydock gates and Command also fired the planetary defense satellites at them as they left. Then as they passed the moon the Cosmo Tiger team just happened to be on training exercises (that was also planned) and they all docked and off they went.

^^^ That's another similarity, too. Excelsior and Andromeda were both the first in a new line of next-generation starships designed to push their predecessors into obsolescence. Both highly advanced and automated and considerably larger than what came before and tasked to stop said predecessors as they were being stolen. The only real difference was Andromeda's Captain Hijikata/Gideon was a man of honor and Styles was an arrogant shitstick.

As far as which ship is better, for a long time I easily preferred the Andromeda. But the Excelsior has grown on me over the years, so I'm not entirely sure any more. I guess, at the end of the day, nothing that Starfleet has could stand up to a direct hit from Andromeda's twin WMG's.
