As is often the case with this series, I feel like people are looking at this backwards - from a "within show" perspective, rather than from a showrunner perspective.

The showrunners might have a list of potential candidates for the new captain. I wouldn't be surprised if they already cast him or her honestly, given they have to have the scripts of the the beginning of the series done if they are filming in two months. But at the time when they finished up Season 1, they had no idea, so they structured the scene to be open ended - to allow for the casting of someone of any race or gender if they thought they'd bring the right chemistry into the role.

Future Admiral Cartwright....
Nasty. Me likey.
Garth is the one with the black
mask, who’s always saying “I am your father.”? Asking for a casual viewer... :guffaw:
No. He's Michael Knight's evil twin. They'll be installing a precursor to the M5 when he comes aboard, called KARR*, as well. ;)

*Klingon Automated Retaliatory Response - just starts blowing stuff up when it detects Klingons. Any stuff. Any Klingons. :D

Good point. And, honestly, what would have been benefit of revealing it in the finale? You already had the big cliffhanger ending to generate water-cooler discussion and bring us back next season. Why throw away the reveal of the new captain when it's sure to be upstaged by the surprise appearance of the Enterprise?

Now they get to make a Big Announcement later on and generate some more publicity, closer to the debut of Season Two . ..

They also had a major and devastating war where lots of people where killed, including I assume many highly ranked Starfleet officers, thus people just get promoted quicker. Maybe that explains Kirk's fast rise! Lol

Real life example, read up on the Westpoint Class of 1915 'The Class The Stars Fell On' there was an unprecedented amount of people that became Generals from that class (like a third of the class) because between the rapid rise through the ranks they got out of the gate through WWI and then 20 years later due to WWII...

Times of war means rapid rises in ranks, thus it would make logical sense Saru could be premoted fast.

This all depends on what the makeup of the ranks really is. Keep in mind here too that the war is over. No need to quickly fill a position with the guy around the corner in the trench. Starfleet with a space based war that is over has different constraints and options than an Earth based war that is ongoing.

Ships may be disabled with a surviving captain or experienced first officer. Also for every remaining ship there is likely a captain and XO remaining. The XOs are likely to be more experienced then Saru. Also with Burnham now magically restored of her rank, and responsible for "saving the day" she would make more sense as a captain in some ways, and less in others. Discovery is also the only ship with the spore drive, and even though it is supposedly shut off, it is an asset that needs to be considered carefully. Starfleet, if behaving logically, would staff their remaining ships with the most capable leaders they had already to ensure maximum utility while they slowly rebuild. For Saru to become captain, there would need to be a really good reason, otherwise it is just emotional sloppy show writing.

Based on past Trek, some reasonable assumptions, and the fact that the show told us there would be a new captain, I can't see a good argument for Captain Saru at this time. If, however, the events of S2 delay them from reaching Vulcan long enough so Starfleet has had enough time to repair disabled ships and build some new ones, then the math shifts more in his favor more so if the spore drive is not a major factor.

On the topic of the post and the typo, I think it would be fun to have a (Doctor) Who vet as captain. Eccleston and/or Tennant would work well. Capaldi would be great too and he even auditioned for DS9 back in the 90s. Matt Smith is probably too young but that could be addressed with Vulcan makeup.

I'm not even sure how a labor union would work in the Federation - considering no one gets a salary, and basically everything (including medical care) is provided to people for free. I suppose you could still have shop stewards who deal with things like grievances.

And to ensure adequate replicator rations

My vote would go to Cornwell if she was on the list, I'd also love to see an Andorian Captain, but it should be obvious that it can't be Saru or Burnham or anyone on the Discovery crew otherwise why would they be traveling to meet the Captain?

I wonder if they're hoping to cast a "big name" actor to replace Michelle Yeoh and Jason Isaacs and become the new captain?

Oh, trust me they will find something to complain about.

Phaser banks built in one factory on Andoria, being built for several different classes of starships all being built at Utopia Planitia, must be shipped on different transports. The people unloading the ships, and placing the phaser banks into storage, may not be the same ones that carry the components to the ship construction site. If people from Group A are having difficulties, people from Group B will never, ever, under any circumstances help out.

Star Trekyfing a problem that drives me up the wall.

Wasn't the original thought/fan-rumour that the show would be about Number One from The Cage? So I guess she could well take over.
