Any guesses what the sixth totem will be?
I don't think this schedule expansion decision will have any effect on the network's reluctance to risk oversaturation by having more than four superhero-comic-book-based series airing simultaneously.
Well, he was in the last scene of the episode before this week's, so he technically was in two already.I suspected that before this was announced. The surprise that he is not in next week's episode after originally reported he would be in two. I was going to post Monday that maybe he will be back later in the season and forgot to do it. They certainly seem to set up him having a role in freeing Sarah of being possessed. Though that scene between John and Ray at the end made me wonder if that advice was setup in case Matt Ryan was unable to return.
They barely managed to do that now, if Black Lightning gets an expanded episode order next season it's gonna be nearly impossible not to have 5 of them on at least some of the time.
Agreed. I find his whole "deeply tormented, but also a wisecracking, oh-so-British smartass!" shtick obnoxious."Bloody 'ell, ya bloody wankuh." I only saw a couple of episodes of Constantine back when it first aired but Matt Ryan feels like someone exaggeratedly cosplaying a character rather than inhabiting a role. The unnatural blonde hair and perfectly unkempt shirt and undone tie don't help. I know he's a fan fave but I have trouble buying the character.
Agreed again. Demon/possession stories inherently bore me, and mixing them with LoT's time-surfing goofiness doesn't much work - it's like mixing beef stew with peppermint ice cream. I find it telling that the writers saw fit to basically remove Mick, the Legends' unlikely beating heart of the show, from the mix to make the story work even to the extent it did. Overall, I found the episode okay, but not much fun.Despite how well done the demon possession scenes are done I'm not real crazy with this stuff in Legends, just doesn't feel right but we'll see as the story goes on. Some of the possession contortions were quite effective but it's a bit too Supernatural for me.
I like the portrayal of Constantine, but I find he is written a little bit too bland/nice-guyish. He's supposed to be a prick, He's supposed to be the ultimate con-artist. He's supposed to have no qualms sacrificing his friends to get the job done. This guy is just too...nice.
I will have to disagree here--Sarah knows the consequences and in many ways she is more like Constantine in the comics--if that had happened to one of the more naive characters I'd be inclined to agree with you.He let Sara get possessed by Mallus in order to get back to the present, right after sleeping with her. He let her believe she had the willpower to drive the demon out, even though he probably knew it wouldn't succeed. That seems like a pretty no-qualms sacrifice to me.
In his own show, I think he was softened a bit and made a bit more heroic compared to the comics; he still did some pretty crummy things to his friends sometimes if it was needed, but he did have qualms about it. And he was trying to do good and help others in hopes of saving his own damned soul. I'd say his portrayal here is reasonably consistent with how he was there.

The issue isn't Sara's personality, it's Constantine's. Another character might've refused to let Sara go through with something so dangerous, especially right after sleeping with her. But John isn't that sentimental.
In the NBC show (which is the version this is a continuation of), Constantine had his moments where you saw what kind of dark things he was capable of, but they didn't happen in every single case. All his old friends/acquaintances who kept showing up loved to talk about how badly he'd let them down or screwed them over in the past, but they usually ended up more or less making amends, if they didn't end up dead. I think the NBC show was going for a middle ground -- he used to be like the comics character, but now was trying to be better, if only for the sake of his soul. He could still be manipulative, treacherous, and deceptive, but usually to serve a greater good, or at least stop the evil of the week. So maybe by now he's gotten more practice at being a halfway decent bloke, at least when it suits him.
Anyway, apparently he will have a return appearance on LoT; maybe he came off so "nice" here so the Legends will be taken off guard when he screws them over next time, or something.
I would prefer to see a version of Justice League Dark or an equivalent DC mystics show in the Arrowverse.
