Should I give Discovery another chance?

The season is not a long one compared to previous Trek and if you can, watch the remaining episodes like a long movie. For me it's a different experience and might alleviate some of the frustrations.

My guess is you might be further exasperated by the resolutions of what you have seen in the first 6 episodes but in the process one becomes more familiar with the characters and the feel of the show. In my opinion Saru improved as a character, so that's a plus!

Next season I'm not so sure. Depends if I want to invest in Netflix again.

Season 2 was the breaking point for me. (Granted I later watched seasons 3 and 4, but that was years later after they hit Netflix.)

I agree with the OP.

It’s a frustrating series to watch,because all the ingredients are there. The budgets there,the story material is there and the actor quality is top notch.For all the faults of the series,the actors aren’t one of them. The fact that the episodes are still engaging despite the weak plot tells you something about the actor quality.

Problem is , the story sucks. Mudds arranged marriage is on screen for thirty seconds and sounds more interesting then Burhnams entire character arc. That’s a problem. The TOS episodes didn’t have modern visual effects or snazzy ship to ship combat. But they did have great actors and simple-yet-potent stories which had a relevance to challenges of the day.

I’d love to see a Star Trek Discovery episode where the characters star in a story like that.There was a line Mudd said which spiked my hopes on this front- he mentioned how war was always profitable for some people. Picture a series where Starfleet is shown to be arming up against its mandate of exploration not because of the Klingons,but because a choice few Earth leaders got rich off a long war. Maybe even cut in T’Rell and T’Kuvma seeing clan leaders in the Klingon side getting powerfull too from colluding with the Earth businessmen to get paid. A Star Trek story arc about a giant military industrial complex is just an idea off the top of my head,but it’s more relevant and entertaining then the mess we got called “Season 1”.

I couldn't make it past one episode, too much just grated against me. Plus from what I've gleamed from subject titles a lot of characters are killed off as a means of adding drama and angst. Not much of what I've read about episodes and storylines sound just that great, though I do have a couple of friends telling me how great it is and I need to watch it (but then again others have told me that about how amazing Breaking Bad is but I just don't see it).

This was my experience, too - season 2 lost me in first run, and I only saw 3 and 4 many years later. I still don't think I've seen all of 3. That show was bland upon bland. I'd take mirror Lorca's bifurcated penis over that any day.

Honestly, if you really start digging into it, pretty much all of ST is pretty bad. I mean most of the TOS episodes are ridiculous. A parallel planet "E pleb nista", really? God creatures everywhere waiting to irritated by, play with, or test humanity in some way.

TNG...boring set of characters. Go forth and explore...the holodeck. Picard, Mr. extra dry. TNG season 1 was probably the worse ST of all.

At least DISCO hasn't created the eye candy girl (yet) that is so prevalent in ST.

Anyhow critiquing all of ST hardly answers the OPs comments....
Overall I like the fresh approach of DISCO. Using someone aside from the captain as the main focal point is an interesting switch from the norm. The characters are more complex and are taking much more time to develop than past ST. They have many elements of the rough around the edges humans/federation of TOS. Mutiny isn't unthinkable.

They showed a side of Klingon Kronos (or Qo'nos) which as by far more interesting than anything before. People living their lives as Burnham aptly put it.

The Voq/Ash, though obvious, ended up somewhere unique. Yes it is basically out of Stargate ala Samantha Carter Tokra thing, but allows for some interesting development unique to ST. Sure you have Dax, but that is very different.

The alternate universe Girgoiou (sp?) running around also has potential. Basically I look at her as the new Khan. Maybe not genetically engineered, but societally engineered definitely. A wolf amongst sheep in the regular universe.

Don't eat me alive as these are just some points, not perfectly stated without holes, but you should be able to get my drift.

I wouldn’t argue that Star Trek as a whole has quite a few weak points. It’s that with DISCO, it keeps teasing there’s a better version of this show than what we’re seeing onscreen. So much of it feels like it needed a couple more passes at the writing phase, and yet there are moments where it all does come together, albeit briefly.

It's mediocre Star Trek. It's not nearly as bad as some of the more embarrassing episodes of the past series, but if you missed it, you really didn't miss a whole lot. Other than the arguments in here, which are actually more entertaining than the show.
