Star Trek Canon + The News = Wonkiness

Star Trek is a fictional timeline, it doesn't unfold. Real Life is what actually unfolds. What if the two were merged?

Let's find out. This is pretty wild because we're adding Star Trek on top of what's already happened. ;)

This is all for fun. Don't take it too seriously because it's all in jest.

The Eugenics Wars were from 1992 to 1996. So, George HW Bush must have been horrible with foreign policy. He had sky high approval ratings after Desert Storm only to see them plummet due to the Recession. And now... the Eugenics Wars break out! He bungles the job. Bill Clinton wins the '92 Election. Then, somehow Bill Clinton helps to get us out of the Eugenics Wars. And before November of 1996, in time for "Future's End" and his re-election.

After 1967, Henry Starling becomes the pioneer in developing computer technology, pushing the PC Industry and he beats Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to the punch. They're competition. Once Henry Starling and his 29th Century technology are out of the picture, after 1996, the brain power behind his company is gone and they collapse. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs compete on an evened out playing field.

2024 is either the eighth year of a Trump Presidency or the fourth year of a Democratic Presidency. So either Trump's policies result in the creation of Sanctuary Districts or Democrats' actions or inaction lead to their creation and however well-intended they might have been, turn into disaster. If nothing else, the "good" news is despite Trump, World War III doesn't start until a few decades later.

Somehow climate changes in California to the point where, by 2024, you have to wear long-sleeve shirts and jackets in August! How the climate changes so drastically, I have no idea.

Feel free to add to what I'm leaving out... but you have to keep what's actually already happened as much the same as possible.

Sanctuary cities definitely seem like something Trump would sign off on.

Personally, I like Greg Cox's interpretation of the Eugenics Wars in his Eugenics Wars duology, where it's a shadow war fought in the background via proxy wars (Khan instigated the 1987 South Korean pro-democracy uprising, had Ayatollah Khomeini killed, aided Afghan fighters who battled the Soviet Union, etc.).

Free housing, free food, free job placement (before a economic downturn). No, more likely the sanctuary districts were the work of liberal city councils, not Trump. Another half thought out solution to "help" the poor.

The idea that the Bell Riots takes place in the waning days of Trump's Presidency is a perfect fit. Given how sloppily it was handled by the government, it's basically Trump knowing that he can half-ass his way through this without facing consequences. After all, the election to select his replacement is about a month and a half away, meaning there's really no point to get the ball rolling on impeachment proceedings when a new President's going to be sworn in in January anyway.

As opposed to Trump's "Poor and sick people should have the decency to just die in the streets" policy.

I enjoyed Greg Cox's version. But I prefer an all out version of the Eugenics Wars. We just end up cashing our own tails if we keep trying to match up Trek history with real world history. On Star Trek's 100th anniversary we'll be having a new movie where yet another reboot goes back and prevents WWIII and Zefram Cochrane from inventing warp drive, just to explain why we don't have it in real life. I'm fine with just letting Trek be its own thing.

Even though I vote Democrat, and I voted for Hillary, I have to admit the idea of Bill Clinton winning the Eugenics Wars sounds completely ridiculous. I don't know why.

But ridiculous is why we have this thread.

He must have had some super Secretary of Defense.

The Space Program. We have ships like the Botany Bay by 1996. And artificial gravity. So, the Space Race must not have stopped with the Moon. Four more Voyager probes were launched before the Turn of the Millennium.

Clearly the Soviets didn't want to let up. After losing the Moon, they took the Space Race to Mars.

Leningrad exists in the 23rd Century, so maybe Putin wants to reassemble the Soviet Union in more than just All But Name.

True, I think we're already fast approaching the point of no return on reconciling Trek's 21st century with our own (if not long past it), the sanctuary districts being one of the big ones, since they were apparently part of such a big, public social upheaval.

Don't forget that manned Saturn probe . . . . :)

(When I wrote THE RINGS OF TIME, I was acutely aware that the clock was running out when it came to that Saturn mission, so I needed to write that book now before I missed my envelope.)

Or...

The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 was the seed that grew into the Eugenics Wars (plural). Taking advantage of the distraction of the Iraqi invasion, groups of augments claimed power in 40 nations from the Middle East to Asia by 1993. Operation Desert Storm in 1992 was the start of the Eugenics Wars but was ineffective in halting this "Eugenics/Augment Spring." The US election in 1992 proceeds as it does in our timeline with George W only serving 1 term and losing to Clinton. Perhaps the ineffectiveness of Desert Storm in removing the Augment in Iraq (or Kuwait) added to Clinton's victory. By 1996 the Eugenics Wars expanded into Bosnia/Herzegovina with Augments on both sides ripping apart the former Yugoslavia. In 1994 the Augments spread the Eugenics Wars to Rwanda. All told, the Augments were responsible for ethnic cleansing wars in both the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda as well as other nations. By 1996 the Augments had burned themselves out in conflict and devastated their respective countries so much that they were finally defeated.

Areas of Conflict in the Eugenics Wars

1990 - Iraq, Kuwait (Persian Gulf), Turkey, Niger, Mali, Philippines, Syria
1991 - Yugoslavia (Bosnia, Croatia), Djibouti, Sierra Leone, Algeria, Somalia
1992 - Afghanistan, Bosnia, Croatia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Georgia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Albania
1993 - Burundi, India, Burma
1994 - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Yemen, Rwanda
1995 - Ethiopia, Eritrea
1996 - Uganda, Congo, Nepal, China, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Vietnam, Cambodia

With the theater of conflict limited to Asia, the Middle East and northeast Africa, people in the Western Hemisphere were able to live as if the war was not happening. Much like World War II, Korea, Vietnam, both Gulf Wars, and the current War on Terror in the real world.

Also, much like today's world, the US was only limited in involvement, much like the real world US involvement in the Bosnian Civil War and the other real world conflicts during this time.

It has little to do with climate change, actually. San Francisco is almost as far north latitude as Denver and Salt Lake City. It's going to be colder in the late summer and early fall, as well as colder, even much colder, in the winter than Los Angeles.
