What if for season 2, everyone thinks the captain is a Vulcan but secretly they're Romulan?
Kirk will most definitely show up as Security/Tac officer at some point.
Maybe as a cameo, but not as a recurring character.
Discovery is against having straight male heroes, and Kirk would overshadow Burnham and friends.
Unless we get evil Mirror racist Kirk, or a Klingon disguised as Kirk.

You're counting the background extras from the bridge crew who are just there to take up space and deliver exposition lines? Calling them 'characters' is a stretch.
The heroes of STD are Burnham, Tilly, Staments, His dead lover, Saru, and to a much lesser extent Cornwell and sadly Mirror Georgiou and L'Rell.
I'm fine with what the producers are doing, but let's not bury our heads in the sand and deny it.
You aren't going to get a Kirk-esque hero on STD. He's too much of a male power fantasy.

In my headcanon, Robau is the President of the Federation when DSC takes place.
Plan B was to just send Robau to Qo'Nos alone, with a tire iron.
But Starfleet was too ethical for genocide.
FWIW, Faran Tahir has said that he would gladly play Robau again (if DSC asked him to). I figured, having him be the Federation President would be a great way to pull this off.

Yeah, honestly if he had been in charge instead of that doofus admiral at the battle of the binary stars, the Klingons would have sued for peace then and there.
I'll continue to hold out hope for Captain Garth until the bitter end. Canonizing the name Kelvar Leonard Garth is optional. Of course the problem is that Kirk has read about his deeds at the Academy so it would be a bit stretching credibility if a war hero (supposedly we're before his fall from grace) was given command of a glorified science vessel. But I'd love it because it would establish a running gag that Discovery's captain position is cursed as everyone who ever sat in that chair would turn out to be a villain sooner or later.
