A friend of mine who I do judo with - who is much more of a warsie than I am (and he doesn't care for Star trek, but somehow we're friends anyway, go figure), posted something on FB last night that says there's a Netflix original series called Star Wars: the Old Republic on the way. I don't know anything more about it but, presumably, it will take place in an era long predating the films.
Yeah, reckless speculation is reckless. There's a petition up for it, but Disney is moving to its own streaming platforms and will likely use one of the several shows announced to launch it. Disney will likely have no need for Netflix soon.
^Yeah, pretty much. Plus if they're launching or expanding their own service, a Star Wars show is exactly the kind of huge draw they'd want to encourage people to sign up. Why would they ever give it to Netflix? Until any *actual* evidence of this shows up, I'm calling BS.
Well unless they do what CBS did with ST, and let Netflix have the rights outside of the USA. Though I believe it when I see the series.
From what I've read on the matter, Disney's new streaming service will (attempt to) be a global service similar to Netflix.
Didn't Netflix grow to become global service? Adding new territories over time. Sure launching globally is feasible but I suspect they would start off in a few territories first.
When Netflix started did it launch in every country on the same day or did it slowly expand into other countries over time. Sure Disney launching a global service on the same day is feasible but I think it's more likely they would start off in a few countries to begin with adding move countries over time.
Who said anything about Netflix launching globally? I certainly didn't. But just to answer your question, it started by sending out DVD's in the post and then expanded to streaming when the infrastructure permitted it. To be honest, I couldn't care less if they just launch in North America at first, and then launch in other territories later, I was merely relaying some third had information that I read somewhere regarding Disney launching their own streaming service.
I can confirm it's true. I heard it from my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who knows my father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate.
Disney has already said they are developing multiple series for their streaming service, I can't see them doing that and something for Netflix. They've also said they will be pulling all of the Disney stuff on Netflix, so I can't see them doing that, just to put a new series on there. I think the Marvel series might stay on Netflix, but that's probably just because they were for Netflix, and they realize the fans would probably riot if they pulled them. So I'm finding this very, very doubtful at the moment.
Bit of an aside, but I really don't think that fans will riot over a change in distribution platform. A more likely hindrance would be whatever pre-existing deal Marvel had with with Netflix regarding future productions. Plus, I'm pretty sure Netflix actually put some money up for those shows so Disney may not be able to stop Netflix carrying them even if they wanted, at least in the near future.
Hasn't this "Netflix show about the Old Republic in development" rumour been circulating for two years now?
