Botanist/gardener wanted! What plant is this?

rhubarbodendron

my sister just sent me this photo of a highly unusual tree or shrub she encountered on the Canary Islands, asking me what this might be.
Frankly, I have no idea - I've never encountered any plant only remotely similar to this one. All I can say for sure is that it is definitely neither Central European nor Mediterranean.
Can anyone help us identify the plant, please?

(The pic is very large - hence I hyperlinked rather than posting it here - but unfortunately a bit blurred. I hope she'll send me a better one soon)

Wow, google was no help at all. Maybe an imported plant not native to the islands?

Those green things look similar to okra pods.

Are you sure that's one plant and not two?

There are several Facebook pages that revolves around plant identification. There are probably other sites that do the same thing.

I was wondering the same about whether it’s one or two plants.

I googled "Canary Islands Flora" and "Canary Islands Plants". Tons of pictures and a few dedicated sites like this one.

But nothing that looked like that plant, which made me wonder if it was an imported thing.

It's a tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata) - native to central Africa, and introduced in the Canaries. In some places it's considered an invasive species.

Thank you all, especially M'Sharak! An African tulip tree. Awesome! I've never seen anything only remotely like that. but then I've not yet been to Central Africa. Definitely something to put on my bucket list if they have such pretty trees there.

Ar-Pharazon! Long time no see! I'm proud to have lured you out of your lair :D
Yes, googling was the first thing I tried (in vain, like you). I'm a pretty good botanist but in this case I frankly didn't even have a clue as to the family, let alone the genus and species. I was wondering about the number of plants as well but a look at the foliage showed that it's indeed one single plant; the pic is just taken from a slightly unhappy angle.

I never went anywhere, did I? Am I here now?

Maybe I just haven't posted outside of a few places lately

Not much in Misc, at least. I only post here and in the Lounges - the other parts of the board have too many controversial topics for my taste. My job hasn't left me much time lately to go online and I spend my vacations without internet. It all sums up.
