CBS had previously shelled out a big pilot production commitment to Magnum P.I., an update of the classic 1980s Tom Selleck series set in Hawaii. It hails from Peter Lenkov, CBS/CBS Studios’ go-to writer for rebooting iconic procedurals who has successfully revived Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver, and Davis Entertainment (The Blacklist).

Cagney and Lacey is a reboot of the iconic 1980s police procedural starring Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless, which ran on CBS for seven seasons.

Written and executive produced by Bridget Carpenter, the series will follow two female police detectives and friends who keep the streets of L.A. safe. CBS TV Studios is co-producing with MGM Television.

CBS wants to be the reboot network. They already have Hawaii 5-0, MacGyver and SWAT. Crazy.

Guess CBS wants to be known as the 'Blast to the Past' Network. What's next? Dukes of Hazzard?

As for Higgins, I think it would be fun to see Peter Dinklage in that role.

I'd heard they were thinking of doing that for Magnum, but not Higgins.
Linked article said:
Magnum P.I. will feature the same central quartet of characters as the original but, instead of four guys, it will consist of three men and a woman, with Higgins (played by John Hillerman) reconceived as Juliet Higgins.

I rewatched Cagney & Lacey recently and was struck all over again by how brilliant it is. IMO a great deal of that brilliance was due to the cast, which really was one of those near-miraculous, lightning-in-a-bottle groups that worked together seamlessly and fabulously. On that basis alone I can't envision tuning in to any remake / reboot.

Gless and Daly had as good of on-screen chemistry as any two people in TV history.

Daly had appeared on an episode of Burn Notice and it was like magic. Unfortunately, the episode/part was written as a one-off, which I thought was too bad because it would have made for a really fun recurring role.

They're never going to recapture that magic. But there certainly needs to be more women-lead cop procedurals, so I suppose banking on the brand name couldn't hurt.

Magnum shouldn't be too hard to get right. As long as they keep it simple.

Of all the 80s nostalgia shows so far, the only one I've thought was any good was Lethal Weapon. But that's because they didn't try to do much with the original concept.

I much rather have continuations than reboots. Magnum and MacGyver could be the son / daughter of the former character. That way the 'parents' can show up from time to time. Hell same with Hawaii 5-0.

And I couldn't get into Lethal Weapon, because as good as it is, I just wasn't feeling it.

The white guy's accent drives me nuts so I couldn't watch it.

No, reboot CBS so this doesn't happen anymore and it isn't junk news reporting either.

At this point it simply needs some gutting. It's gone from the joke network to being something old folks watch, to being the joke network of reboots.

Remakes/boots? They will always be with us. But they could cut back a little. (okay a lot) No idea what CBS's "junk news" is, since I don't watch them for news.

I read sometime ago that the original Magnum was going to be set in the same universe as the 1968-80 Hawaii-5-0. I wonder if the new one will be?

Oh, wasn't the accent for me. I felt that despite being based on a popular movie series which was also a comedy, the series felt more like a regular procedural with familiar names.
