Black Lightning’ DC Superhero Series In Works From Greg Berlanti, Mara Brock Akil & Salim Akil

That's an...interesting costume. At this point Black Lightning is the only CW show I'm interested in. The generally terrible writing has made me drop the other shows, so hopefully Black Lightning can be as good as the early seasons of Flash and Arrow and not be like the current stuff.

Hmm. Kind of a cluttered design, but I like the colors. It's an interesting idea, using a sound-wave graph as the belt and piping for a character named Thunder. And those lines of rectangles on the upper chest and vambraces resemble equalizer display bars, another way of depicting sound. Apparently the character's main power in the comics is strength and invulnerability, but she can create shock waves in the ground by stomping.

Also kind of a weird mask/visor design. I'd think it might make it hard to see attacks coming from above.

It's kind of weird to me that BL's daughters are called Thunder and Lightning, given that those are also the nicknames of a pair of superpowered brothers who were recurring characters in Teen Titans and who have no apparent connection to this Thunder and Lightning. It'd be confusing if the Titans show on TNT used those characters, although since they're both Berlanti-produced, that might not be a concern.

The city is named Freeland now? Last I read it was going to be in Los Angeles. I can understand the benefits of a fictional city but that does not sound like a city name to me. EDIT I looked up that name and turns out there are a number of small towns named that... shows what I know ;)

Frankly, I wish that it was Metropolis (which is where BL does his thing in the comic books) with him maybe occasionally meeting or mentioning Superman. But, I guess that the showrunning team had to make it different.

There's enough "but where's Superman?" happening over in the Supergirl threads.

This is not set in the Arrowverse, and we already have 2 different versions of Superman in live action, so they probably didn't want to do a third.

Not explicitly, not so far. They naturally want the show to establish its own identity, but there's nothing so far to rule out the possibility of a future connection being established. The pilot did mention that there are superheroes in other cities, so the opening is there.

Stories are about characters and ideas and themes, not about the kind of continuity bookkeeping that fans get preoccupied with. If a brand new show wants to stand on its own, that's not about universe labels; it's just about establishing its own voice and characters and stories. A new show's priority is itself, not other shows. That doesn't mean it will never cross over with those other shows -- it just means that's not an important issue at this point, one way or the other.

Freeland is a more original name than the usual DC TV designation of (something) City.

I am perfectly fine with the vague reference to SOME superheroes... let them see if it is worth connecting, and if so how.

Personally, I think connecting with Earth 1 is best, so BL can connect with Joe on having kids in the hero business, and Mrs. Pierce can mentor Iris on her relationship.

Any idea where Freeland is (approximately)? Is it an Atlanta equivalent? Maybe Texas (i.e. Freeland where freed slaves settled?) Or is Freeland an area of a city (like NY's 5 boroughs, or Chicago's Downtown/North/West/South sides)
