Jason Isaacs VS Sonequa. Who Should Have Been The Series Lead? (Spoilers)

Sadly, Burnham is a poor lead. She is poorly written and, regrettably, poorly performed. If they were trying to make a statement about diversity then no Lorca should not have been the lead. I would have gone with an actress like Viola Davis or Octavia Spencer, made her Captain from the off and made the show more of an ensemble piece. I also would have made the show more episodic with the serialisation a background arc like the revived Doctor Who has done on and off successfully.
Really, should have just kept Yeoh if it was a "statement about diversity" as the only goal.

Oh I know that. I meant figuratively. He's moved from being the 'Captain' of this series, to an evil Mirror baddie. No way he'll ever be able to continue as Captain. This is obviously to elevate Sonequa to being the Captain [see my thread on that].

I have no doubt they always wanted Isaacs as the villain, and Sonequa as the hero/lead...... it was just a waste.
We all know that Burham will bne Captain, such has been the painfully predictable storytelling so far. Personally though I would have liked Prime Lorca to have shown up at the end of these MU stories as I think it would have been interesting to see the contrast in the two versions, with the Prime Lorca no doubt being more Starfleety and likely a broken man as a result. Sadly I think we'll find out that Prime Lorca went down with the Buran (although it begs the question why there would be two Lorcas on the Buran in the first place).

So, wait a second-there are complaints that a Star Trek show should focus on the captain as the lead and now DISCO is "painfully predictable?"

Did I miss something?

Yes, you missed that her arc is not only predictable but inevitably confirms that they never really moved away from the Captain as the lead formula, as they claimed to, because it's hard top get away from the Captain/commanding officer inevitably becoming a key focus.

Oh, and an opinion is not necessarily a "complaint". That's just deliberately inflammatory language intended to demean those with whom you disagree.

Since when has good acting been a requisite for the series lead? Shatner was for the most part awful but got by on charisma and a girdle, Patrick stewart was phoning it in for the first two seasons of TNG. Avery brooks reportedly didn't become comfortable as Sisko until he was allowed to shave his head, and there are plenty of people who hate his acting. Kate Mulgrew is probably the only actor who did well from the outset, and even then she gets a heap of criticism from segments of the fanbase. Scott Bakula is a great actor but he was terribly miscast as Archer.

I think Sonequa Martin-Green does a good job for the most part, is there room to improve sure there is. But you're comparing someone who has 10 years acting experience with Jason Isaacs who has been acting for the same amount of time that Martin-Green has been alive.

She lacks charisma and is not an engaging personality IMO. Trek doesn't require an Oscar winner. But it does require a lead that engages.

Are they trying to do an inverse Spock thing with Burnham? Why does the character act like she's either bored or vaguely scared all the time? Is it the actress? The writers? Both?

They should have the Discovery return to the Prime Universe via interphasic space. Everyone would go nuts and the ship would be staffed with an all new crew. And real Klingons would kill all the new Klingons. And Mark Lenard would rise from the grave and bitch slap the recasted Sarek. And the whole thing is a program Riker made up in the holodeck to scare Barclay.

What was the question again?

Since the show is still about the lead's journey to the captains chair, I assume it will be a few more seasons before she gets there. Sort of like Hornblower.

It was meant as neither. I misunderstood is all. I demean no one as much as I can.

It'll probably be the final episode, brining Georgiou's comments in the first episode full circle. In the meantime Saru will either be captain or we'll get a new captain and Burnham will get her commission back and probably be first officer.

Sounds like a David Gerrold story.

Patrick Stewart had zero charisma when TNG started, and a lot of the fans at the time felt the same way. Can Martin-Green not be given the benefit being allowed to grow into the role like other Star Trek leads did?
Yes of course she can, and should.

I disagree that Stewart had no charisma though. He was no Shatner, but he wasn't wooden.

It's hard to tell if it's the material she's been given or if she's just a below average actress. Her line delivery is extremely wooden and stilted, she often overacts in the most cringy way (look at the dumb faces she pulls during the party scene when she see Tilly) she's supposed to be playing an emotionless human but nothing like that comes through (7of9 had the same sort of arc around struggling with logic and human emotions from a human perspective and it's done way better).

Again though, hard to tell if it's the material she is working with which is frankly god awful most of the time, or her acting ability.
