Which is why the show needed to be led by a Patrick Stewart/ Bill Shatner level actor rather than one who isn’t much better than Trek’s B cast.

Ok I do love William Shatner - but calling him an A actor could be a stretch. He does have a charisma factor - but I would bet Patrick Stewart and Jason Isaacs were getting "A"s in acting class - and William Shatners best bet for getting an "A" would have been sleeping with the teacher.

But as I said, a big issue is where the two episodes added late in production were tacked on exactly. I know some people think they were added to the end of the season, in which case it's very unlikely they could just string out the climax of the season. But I suspect that one of them was Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad, because aside from having the first inklings of the Burnham/Tyler romance the plot had little to do with the season-long arc.

I don't think episode 7, Magic To Make The Sanest Man Go Mad, was one of the episodes tacked on because that episode was written by Aron Eli Coleite and Jesse Alexander. They also wrote episode 4. As of episode 10, Despite Yourself, they are no longer credited as Co-Executive Producers and seem to be off the show. I think it's more likely that Episode 7 was more like the direction the show would be under Bryan Fuller and it might have been re-written to fit in with the new direction.

Re-watching all of season 1, with an eye on Lorca. It's immediately noticeable now that he is living inside his head, constantly plotting and re-adjusting to achieve his goal. And it really is all about getting Burnham in front of the Emperor

I also wonder if Bryan Fuller had stayed on if this would have been the direction. As I posted a few pages ago, as of episode 10 there is quite a bit of difference in writers and producers credited. I wonder if episodes 3 - 7 were already written before Fuller left and were re-written (sometimes uncredited) after Fuller departed and Berg/Harberts took over as showrunners (and Akiva Goldsman came in as an Executive Producer). That would explain the changeover in staff as I'm sure Berg/Harberts wanted to hire some writers of their own. It's also possible that Akiva Goldsman came in and changed the focus of the season to the mirror universe. He's also directing the season finale. This is all pure speculation of course.

Yeah, I've noticed the change in writing credits. The last three episodes have all been written by young, relatively unknown writers with no genre experience. I really wonder who is in the writer's room now. I can't find anything about the writer's room staffing, except for things months before the series came out (when they hadn't even filmed the current episodes - the shooting of this season didn't finish until after the season premiere.

But my impression is that Fuller left the show much earlier, and probably had minimal impact past the two "prologue" episodes. If there was a later retooling to the writer's room, it was likely because the showrunners saw some of the same issues that a lot of us did.

Could the 2 extra episodes just been adding more filler/detail into this arc and breaking up the episodes differently (as to why such a short run time this week).

It's possible. I had a theory early on that the opening two-parter was, at minimum - intended to be a one-episode prologue, but they stretched it out through inserting some scenes originally meant to be used as flashbacks elsewhere.

Huh?

In one of the earlier episodes this season it's pretty explicit Prime Lorca's ship was only destroyed when the Klingon war started - some time between episodes 2 and 3. Thus he's only been in the prime universe for a matter of months.

I was only speculating based on what others have said, as I don't have broadband and am unable to watch the series, so I'm not up on all the details.

You could easily have condensed episodes 1-3 into 1-2. Then probably 10-13 into 10-12.

Also, quite possible. I think most people would agree that despite the upheaval behind the scenes, the show has become better and better with each episode and that this half of the season is better than the first half.

^..."Para bellum"/"Into the Forest" is a low point of sorts for me, though. Good bits as regards the general MU Lorca arc, lots of nonsense as regards the two-parter plot.

But I'm happy with that level of uneven already. I just hope no further episodes will make their main plots subservient to the arc of the day.

I think if Fuller had the show it would have mostly focused around the Klingon War and fleshing out the Klingons.
The Fuller ideas have all slowly been dropped 1 by 1 from E4 onwards.

- Burnham doesn't understand emotions or humanity, oh she's a lovebird now and has no problem with humanity or emotions (Burnham arc was done far, FAR better with 7of9)
- Everyone hates Burnham and is terrified of her, nope dropped after 2 episodes.
- Tilly is Autis..Nope not anymore.
- Focusing on Burnham and Tilly as basically cadets, nope, they're bridge crew now.
- Klingons all speak Klingo... No they're speaking english
- Flesh out the Klingon race and different houses, see them for like 2 episodes for like a combined 1 minutes of screen time.
- Voq sent to the Matriarchs, to learn how to infiltrate human societ... nope, just was on L'Rells ship and was transformed by L'Rell.
- Klingon War all together, nope dropped for Mirror Universe.

I honestly think they basically did 1-3 on plan, realised these ideas were all terrible and quickly rewrote what they had to work with. That's what it feels like. The first "half" of the season is a mess of aborted ideas and wonky writing.

But since Lorca has consistently polled as the most popular character, getting rid of him will not be good for ratings. You can't tick off a large section of the show's fanbase and keep your ratings good.

I will be one of those, if Lorca goes, I'm done, I've given this show, so many chances and aside from like 2 episodes (the Mudd timeloop one and Episode 10) it's let me down at every opportunity.
I absolutely HATE the Lorca Mirror Universe non-twist. It's so lazy and cheapens the character so goddamn much.

I've been Homer this entire show so far and I'm not kidding, I'm struggling to not turn on this show with this Mirror Universe Lorca laziness.

Just a thought since the concepts of freedom, independence, equal rights etc are anathema to human culture then it means the Romans defeated the Christians, the USA never won independence from the English, the British Empire never set, the Ottoman empire never disintegrated, Hitler won the war, the Bolsheviks never defeated the Czar since Marxism never caught on (so no USSR, no cold war).
Gosh Earth must be a hellhole!

Some of the early episodes were an ungodly mess. The Butcher's Knife...in particular. The show improved dramatically once they realized a classic Trek A/B plot structure was the best way to keep all of the main cast involved.
