New Andorians

Yep, it elevated visuals to canon and made absolutely no sense. It's nonsense that such a dramatic change in one of the Federation's most prominent contacts would be completely forgotten in a few generations.

How on earth would people like Bashir and O'Brien have never so much as seen an image of a Klingon from that era?

The whole Federation, as well as Kirk and Crew simply forget. I mean it makes the TOS folks look really stupid, much less anyone from TNG cast. I mean what about the other dozen or so races that changed?

I don't mind the new design - but the current makeup crew really love adding things to cheeks don't they - cheeks are the new forehead.

It's okay to leave them smooth sometimes.

Well as Bashir put it. "I'm a doctor, Not a historian!" ;)

Exactly. Bashir, the Starfleet Medical salutatorian, doesn't need to know the viral history of a major species he regular treats on Deep Space 9 and having just studied Arne Darvin's background file. Nor does he have any personal, vested interest in the history of genetic augmentation within the Federation and it allies.

...wait. Was Bashir really just claiming ignorance so people don't suspect his genetic background? Maybe he did know all about it, and that would explain why his proposed explanation ("a viral mutation?") was the correct answer afterall. In fact, he immediately interrupts O'Brien mentioning genetic engineering as a possibility. Like he wanted Worf (who obviously knows) to answer his question instead or drop the subject.

With all this craziness with the Enterprise retcon and now the Discovery monsters, I'm erring on the side of Worf whenever someone asks me about the Klingons: "We do not discuss it with outsiders."

That would have been an issue even at the time of the episode airing, though.

Here's my quick shot opinions: I don't mind the Tellarite. I think the Andorian eyebrow alteration is needless. "Klingons"...yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. And I don't have a set opinion on the trend of taking the Mirror races and making them wickeder looking, which began with the Gorn way back in ENT and seems like a thing given this. But nor do I believe these design revisions are only for the Mirror Universe.

Looking at how Shazad looks like, i'm wondering if part of the reason for his casting is based on his appearance being similar to the TOS Klingons. Maybe Ash's the connection between them and the Discovery Klingons...

I'm not totally against them making fanboi ties, but the Kor name drop was there just for its own sake, which really made it feel cheap.

Kor was introduced as the conquering Governor of a strategic planet at the apex of the 2267 war with the Federation. We later get confirmation in DS9 that he is from an ancient, noble house.

Having that house (the House of Kor) belong to the General and High Council member who led the charge during a portion of the 2256 war makes perfect sense to me. It's not small-universe syndrome. Kor was always a very important member of an Empire led by a small number of oligarchs.

The House of Kor's central presence in both wars (only 10 years apart) helps tie them together and is good continuity.

I really don't mind minor changes like these and I don't need in-universe explanation for it. These retain the overall look and feel of the species, granted, the Tellarites look somewhat more fearsome than previously, but then again these are Mirror Tellarites.

I mean it doesn't bug me that the new Klingons don't have earlobes, but it bugs me a lot that they don't have any hair. Physiologically the former is obviously a much bigger change and would be way harder to explain in-universe if one so desired. But the latter just makes them look and feel completely different, and that bother me way more.

This is very well put, and I agree 100%!

Excellent point.

The Kor connection is one of the things about the DSC Klingons that I love. The attempt to canonically tie the new series into the coming events in TOS through references to familiar characters like Kor is one of the things I enjoy most about the Klingon War subplot.

I don't mind the new Andorian makeup; it can easily be explained as yet another Andorian subspecies.

But the new design suffers from something a lot of things in Discovery do; does it actually look better?

I mean, I expect improvement.

The thing is, the Andorian makeup in ENT was already pretty fantastic; one of the best things about that show; so I'm not sure it really needed changing, for the sake of change. As for the Tellarites, they already looked pretty bad, and equally inconsistent as the Andorians; so the new one is actually pretty believable as a Tellarite; just presumably a burly heavy metal fan/biker Tellarite.

Of course, the real question is, what the hell happens to the Andorians and the Tellarites between TOS and TNG? They're two of the four founding races of the Federation, they're all over the earlier time frame series, and then just gone.

A Tellarite officer killed by Klingons is mentioned on DS9 but we never see one in any of the 24th century series or films. Chronologically the Tellarites all but completely vanish from Trek after TVH.
