The Last Jedi Box Office discussion thread

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

A film that's heading into it's 4th weekend after already making $1.1 billion worldwide (making $35 million) is now 3rd place behind 2 other movies that have been out for less time :wah::wah::wah:

Since when did a movie have to be first place forever? :brickwall:

Are we going to have this fucking nonsense for Avengers 3 & 4 and Episode 9 too.
No one forced you to come into this thread. If you're not interested in box office discussions there's plenty of other Star Wars threads for you to post in.

Since Star Wars.

Yeah! They're tired of giving LFL all the chances.

Holy shit dude are you tailing me or something? Am I under surveillance? If you want, I can come knock on your side window tomorrow morning and bring you some nice hot coffee when I go out to get rolls.

And before you even start. No, that is not a threat, it is a simile.

And you might say that's a tasteless metaphor...and you would be WRONG! It's a simile.*

*With due respect to SF Debris.

Not bad for a "flop", but I don't think anyone expected it to finish behind Furious 7, least of all Disney.

It'll be interesting to see if it beats Deathly Hallows 2, though.

On the other hand, Last Jedi could be the biggest movie of 2017 by the end of this coming week.

Star Wars holds no cultural significance in China and there is no nostalgia factor. Also, the Chinese have (from the westerners' perspective) a rather peculiar tastes in movies. Some truly awful films that crashed and burned in the West made it big over there.

Could someone explain to me exactly what made Furious 7 one of the most popular movies of all time? It's not as simple as "well its action and cars". There are 100s of movies with action and cars that don't make 1.5 billion.

Unlike Star Wars, those movies do have a history of doing well in China.

And people also knew that it would be Paul Walker’s last one. Even for people like me that aren’t massive fans, those movies have been in the pop cultural ‘white noise’ since we were teens. Nostalgia could have lead to people tuning in just to see him off.

Which may also be the reason why the next movie didn’t reach the same numbers.

Ethnic pandering has failed after major disappointment in China.
No.

Simple story, lots of eye candy and easy to understand characters even if English isn't your native language.

You fancy explaining the Ethnic pandering line? while I grab my popcorn...

I've always been surprised that China allows Star Wars to be shown since it's basically about a bunch of rebels fighting against a oppressive force who would deny their subjects many freedoms via an Authoritarian style of Government.

Also it's still impressive that TLJ will probably end it's worldwide total at around $1.4 billion (minimum) without a sizable boost from China.

Isn't it obvious?

And it has ghosts ( of a sort ), which they're supposedly against.
